Help Please Merlin Legend to Magix Conversion

I have a Merlin Legend processor and I am installing a new one in order to upgrade. My understanding on the process was to do the following:
1. Do a backup to hard drive on the machine that has WinSPM V. 9.0.
2. Do a backup to the PCMCIA card that the current processor (Legend) has.
3. Power down the system (both cabinets).
4. Remove Merlin Legend Processor.
5. Install Magix processor module card.
6. Power up the right cabinet, then wait 10 seconds and power up the left.
7. Connect to console via WinSPM 9 and verify that the Magix processor is seen.
8. Go to tools and do a convert within WinSPM.
9. After conversion restart the system.
10. Connect via WinSPM to console.
11. Do a restore from the PCMCIA card.
It has been a long time since I did this and unfortunately I lost my old documentation of when I did it last and I cannot remember all the steps. Hope that helps.

GhostZman, thank you for your assistance. Just so I am on the right page I modified the steps above with your suggestions. Let me know if I missed something.

Is that correct? Just a quick question just so I understand what is happening, why is it necessary to do a restore after the converted backup? When the system reboots does it wipe out the whole configuration? Don't perform a backup after you have converted the file. That will just download the blank database. Backup system. I only back it up to the computer running spm. convert the database using spm. When you convert the database it modifies the backup to be restored to the new system. It doesn't actually load it. Once converted, power down system and install the new processor, turning on cabinets from right to left. Once connected to new system restore the converted database to the new processor. Test.

OK, now we get to the fun stuff. I did a dry run by installing the Magix processor and when I went into WinSPM 9 I received the following message.
WinSPM cannot recognize the circuit pack in slot 8. Quick Access will not be available until this situation is resolved. NOTE: ATL circuit packs can only be used on Merlin Legend systems.
It indicates that the card I have in slot 8 (it is a 800 card) is only compatible with Merlin Legend and not with Magix. Does this mean that I will not be able to use it with the Magix system when converted or is that error normal? What would my option be then? A 800 GS/LS-ID Module perhaps?

The ATL Card can not be used at all, but luckilly for you, it is the last card in the system. While still using the Legend processor, remove the 800ATL, and do a board renumber. Then back up to your PC, then convert, and upload that to the Magix.

Great, that is a bit of a relief. So what I would need to do is just buy the compatible model for Magix (800 GS/LS-ID Module I believe) and once Magix is reloaded install the new card and do a board renumber, correct? Thanks for the assistance of all of you!

Actually, hold on - I misread that slot had an 008 ATL, NOT an 800, which is an 8-line trunk card. There is NO problem in using that, except that you won't be able to use the "quick-access" features of WinSPM to program settings for those lines. Not a deal breaker, as it's much easier to program through the Standard SPM interface anyway.

Hi Everyone:
I have an update. I did replace the Legend with the Magix as indicated above however, my users are now complaining because on two ocassions the power has gone out and the processor seems to lose the programming. The first time I thought it was a fluke. I proceeded to do a restore from pcmcia and everything was fine. On Friday however I got a call from my remote office and it seems to have lost the programming again. I proceeded to do a restore again and now it is up and running fine again. My concern is if there is a setting on the new processor which I missed. The equipment does have a UPS however, that just lasts so long and every Sunday they run an electrical maintenance test so it looses power on Sundays. Does anyone have any clues as to why this would happen?

The Magix processor has a battery that is permanently attached. If that battery has gone bad, then you will lose programming during a power outage. If you bought this unit from a legit source, I would call them and have them replace the processor.

It SHOULD BE permanently attached, there is a Jumper near it that could be off, thus disabling the Memory Holdover the battery does.
You could look to see if that's the case, but since it sounds like it's under warranty, then that would be a good thing for your supplier to do.
And yes, you can just do a restore from the PCMCIA Card.

It sounds to me like you have a processor that still has some Translations in it from the last time it was used.
Therefore, it needs to be reset.
