headset in the handset

Hey all,

I have a mitel 5220 phone (not sure about the controller version). I have an regular corded headset (originally from a Merdian system) it acts the same as the handset and is plugged into the handset plug.

I just changed to a new extension and lost my settings. Orinally we found a setting that would let me hit an button and it would answer using the headset (in the handset plug) without lifting the reciever. Does anyone know what I need to change?

It has been years since we have had to set this up and I am the only person in the company that still does it this way. Currently if you lift lift the handset (no cord on it btw) then the headset comes one.

Do you have a headset key on one of the available keys? If not add one and turn it on and see if that clears your issue.

Headset Key Yup.
You should also consider having a release key so that the phone can transfer calls while in HS mode.

Yes, I have a headset key but that is for a regular mitel headset not a handset and it requires the handset to be lifted.

no if the headset feature is on you don't have to lift the handset.

I'd tell you a UDP joke but I'm afraid you won't get it. TCP jokes are the best because you always get them.

If the headset key is lit then you press the prime key to answer the call....no handset needed. Oh, just plug the Meridian headset in the normal handset socket though....the setting you had would have been some type of handsfree one I would have thought....

Well, thanks all. I found a solution but not the answer. Wireman50 is correct.

So now I just leave the actual handset off hook all the time and it acts as it did before with the handset on.

It just looks funny with no handset. Even though I took the cord off years ago. He he.

It should make absolutely no difference whether the handset is in the cradle or not.

When headset mode is enabled via the key (or feature code), the hookswitch is disabled and all sound is sent to the handset port regardless.

@Waldosworld - no, actually the handset port. This is the entire purpose of headset mode keys/features.

Only direct corded, non-amplfied headsets should be plugged into the headset jack. All other headsets, those with inline connections that allow the handset to be plugged into an adaptor, should be plugged into the handset port. Activating the headset feature disables speakerphone functions and sends voice to the handset jack instead of the speaker. You'll also find that you cannot hangup on a call by using the hookswitch as it is disabled.
