I want to reformat my hard drive because I have too many misc. programs that are slowing down my computer. Please tell me the process of formatting my hard drive and then re-installing Windows 98. Thanks
Before you go reformatting your hard drive, are you sure that it wouldn't be easier to delete the unnecessary programs?

Do you have a good method of backup for the programs that are necessary?

What kind of OS install do you have? Is it for a Windows upgrade? You might have trouble then...
Liam Morley
lmorley@wpi.edu
<a href=
The best thing to do would be to go to add/remove programs and remove anything that you don't need, then clean up your toolbars. Then finally run scandisk and then defrag, this should make a difference if the HD is in a really bad state.
RESTART YOUR PC WITH WIN 98 START UP FLOPPY DISK ONCE THAT HAS LOADED TYPE FDISK DELETE PRIMERY DOS PARTITON THEN CREATE A NEW ONE ONCE YOU HAVE DONE THAT RESTART YOUR PC WITH THE FLOPPY STILL IN ONEC LOADED TYPE FORMAT C: THEN PRESS ENTER PRESS Y THEN IT WILL FORMAT THE HARD DRIVE ONCE THAT HAS DONE TYPE SETUP AND PRESS ENTER WIN 98 WILL NOW START TO INSTALL REMEMBER TO PUT WIN98 CD IN PS IF YOU HAVENT GOT A WIN98 FLOPPY START UP DISK YOU CAN MAKE ONE BY GOING TO CONTROL PANEL PRESS ON ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMMES ON THE TOP RIGHT IT SAYS START UP DISK CLICK ON THAT TO CREAT ONE GOOD LOOK FROM DOODLE
Often to remove (running uninstall or in add/remove progs) a program isn't good enough as it can leave something in the win's register, useless .dll files in windows(/system) directory (some files in "Program files" dir too),... Anyway, the best is to check the system and register manualy. But thats a bit long howto story for writing it here, there are many tips on net (here too?.
But what I wanted to tell is that when you fdisk your hdd (with enabled support for large hdd - that is if you have a hdd larger than 5XXMB) you can run then oemsetup from win98 directory at Win98 inst. CD. You need a boot floppy, either the original "Instalation disk" (don't know the exact name, here it is "zavadzacia disketa" where you can directly choose "Install...." or any boot disk (DOS, WIN95, WIN98 - well so far I have used win98 disk to install win95, but...) which can make run your CDROM (load proper driver in config and MSCDEX in autoexec) so you can manualy run the oemsetup. BTW: the oemsetup will run the formating . Thats it! Good luck.
