In the XL sheet I'm working with, there is a column that contains data with carraige returns (multi-line text). What I need to do is replace all of these line breaks with some other character (like a pipe). Is there a way to do this in Excel (I know you can do it in Word, but Excel does not seem to have those advanced options).

You can go to Edit, Replace commands and type ALT/010 in the Find What field and type whatever you need to replace it with in the Replace With field. "Age is a high price to pay for maturity."

I should mention: ALT/010 means hold the ALT key and press 010 on the numeric keypad. "Age is a high price to pay for maturity."

Thank you, your approach did work. However, there were some other characters that needed to be converted as well. If I knew the codes offhand, I'm sure your approach would have helped finish the job. As it turns out, I "cheated" - I copied the column in Excel to Word, made the changes in Word, and copied the column back into Excel. This worked well, and I was able to use the more user-friendly Find & Replace dialog of Word.
