Fiber Based POTS Line Noise 4

Recently, VZ converted our POTS line (10 lines) from cooper to fiber base. everything is working with this new type of POTS line: credit machine, Fax, fire alarm. meanwhile, I use analog handset to dial-in and out without any issue. but when connect 3 of those POTS into analog trunk on our IPO 500 v2 and tried to dialing out (made short code to dial out as system backup line),I got noise from handset (nothing changed with system setting). after that I used VoIP line to connect into the IP500 and it was working fine. Called VZ support, they said their line parameter are normal and suggested me contact system vendor -- Avaya. Asked one of Avaya partner and the answer was that issue from service provider. have no idea what's going on?

Have you tried to test the pots lines with a butt set before the ip office and see if the same noise occurs.
If not then it's into the ip office.

I have been informed by Avaya that the emulated copper POTS lines from these Alcatel/Lucent OTDs isn't compatible with IP Office - sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. I ended up losing several accounts because of this. Neither company seems interested in solving the issue - nice, huh?

You can either 1) convert them to Verizon SIP trunks or 2) change providers or 3) replace the IP Office with a different manufacturer's equipment.

Yes, I did testing with butt set and regular fax machine as well without any issue. muh, I should keep VoIP line to stay with IPOffice.

Try placing a DSL Filter between the IP Office and each of the CO Lines.

I thought that may work since it is an Inductor that blocks High Frequencies (noise) and passes Low Frequencies (voice).

Keep a few in your truck, you may need them in the future.

Billxx, I've seen the need for DSL filters on a few different phone systems with FIOS. I believe at one point they added DSL functionality to certain models of the FIOS ONT in order to address small multi-tenant units where they could not run fiber risers to each apartment. These ONT models can act as a DSL access module and provide DSL for Internet over the existing copper building riser. It seems that the DSL signal is on by default from the factory and no one at Verizon has the slightest clue as to how to turn it off (or even that it is there and needs to be turned off) so these ONT models spit out a DSL signal on every copper line regardless of whether or not that feature is actually being used in the ONT. It really is Verizon's issue and Verizon's fault and not Avaya's but it ends up being the phone system vendor's headache.

There's probably even a card with the ONT with a toll free tech support number that could give them the answer in about 30 seconds, but 80% of the Verizon technicians are so stupid they don't even know how to install a demarc. So stocking DSL filters seems to be the answer.

Another star - I told Verizon to install DSL filters and while they wouldn't ("we can't work with bare wires" - what horrible techs they hire these days!) they left them at the site for us to plug in.
