Can anyone please tell me if it's possible to split one cell into multiples? BY that I mean if somebody is working on one project for half a day (A½) and on another project for the other half of that day (B½) is it possible to reference these values seperately?

The code used to pull out half days (for A) is:

+(COUNTIF(ALLOCATION!B7:ALLOCATION!IV7,"A½")/2)

But this only works if only A½ is the only entry in the cell, can we split it so that A½ and B½ are treated as seperate entities?

Hola,

I'll point him in this direction and completely agree that it needs a rewrite. The problem is that I don't and will not work with the sheets and therefore have no input; my area of "expertise" is web development as a consultant. Effectively the decision making is outside my remit.

I can but advise though and I will look at the relevant info to gain, at worst, a better personal understanding.

Cheers chaps.

Skip,

Sorry to imply that the customer hadn't been served at all. I was just looking for raw data to carve through (as ugly as it may be).

I just have a "thing" for cleaning up really ugly data. I prefer it to be right in the first place but I get a thrill out of fixing broke stuff. :) (Maybe I should seek therapy...)

Rob,

Does your pulse quicken at the prospect of grabbing such an opportunity (otherwise referred to as a "problem") and running with it? ;-)

Funny enough, yes.

I've even got my three year old into the habit.

Splash! "Oops!!!"
"Daddy, we have an opportunity!"

I used to be a management consultant and it amazed me as to how many days were spent by "smart-types" in cleaning data. There's huge money in the time alone. I gave them a tool to knock three weeks off of their timeline by letting a knock-around Access program clean for them.

They didn't believe it because that wasn't the way they consulted. Oh, well.

I just like finding patterns where others couldn't.

Rob,

It's amazing how different people have a knack for various types of problem solving.

I get bogged down with organizing physical things. I get frustrated!

However, I can figure out a chaotic process almost instinctively (well, not quite, but it's ALOT easier!) And it includes data organization as well. And it often seems like fun! Hmmmmmmmm? Do I have a problem?

Skip,

I think this needs to be it's own forum:
Data Cleaners Anonymous

My current job has nothing directly to do with data cleaning (I'm in Purchasing) but I really enjoy when I have to grab mangled up data from SAP and make sense of it.

My co-workers can't or will spend a week working on it. I'll do it in an hour or so and get bad marks for not staying late. :)

I guess I could make a living off of cleaning data if there was money in it.

Hey All:

I think you both have my bug (or, more precisely, I probably have yours).

I don't hold myself out to be remotely equal to your computing ability, but I think we have the same itch.

I am very proud of the fact that in my last job everyone I worked with ended up doing their job far more efficiently. It became a joke that "You better not let Tim hear you using an adding machine- he'll fix up something in Excel to replace it!!" It was true...

It took awhile, but I finally had my office actually automated, with useful data available to management (one of my innate pet desires). The sound of adding machines still sets me off [red](You can't search it, you can't sort it, ARGGGHHH!!)[/red]

THanks,
Tim

I love firefighting

I really love walking into a mess that people think is unrecoverable, realising in 5 min of analysis I have a good shot of fixing it, and then working through it till it's done. Just love the looks on their faces, and that gives me a real buzz. Love bringing order and method to the madness. Agatha Christie's Poirot is my hero. :)

Well, now!

I think we've hit upon one of the two reasons I come to Tek-Tips!

I'm a giver on this forum as I can make Excel (and others) sing. I'm a taker on the ASP and HTML forums as I'm a dummy whose wife asked him to make a major website (with no training).

I, too, love putting out others' fires.

Flame on!!!!
