Excel file problem

For some reason when I try to open an excel file by double clicking it it wants to install office. If I open the Excel program and then open the file it works!! Anyone know the reason for this or even better how to fix it lol??

go to Start, Run and type
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Excel.exe" /regserver
and click OK

Office 2000 and I have checked the file association is set to excel

Thanks onedtent your suggestion worked although I would still like to know what happened to prevent reoccurence in the future
