Excel Autofill Problems

I have been trying to figure out why the autofill option on Excel 2002 is not working. This is the problem I am having.

Autofill is copying the formula and correcting it to the corresponding cells but the value that shows is from the original copied cell. Visual example:

A B C formula
1 99.56 99.56 =A1-B1
2 98.625 99.56 =A2-B2
3 97.125 99.56 =A3-B3
4 96.375 99.56 =A4-B4

The cells in column C is where the formula resides. The autofill is putting the correct formula in but the value showing is from the first formula.

Why is it doing this???

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

Chad

Change it to an absolute reference (i.e. -A$1$-B$1$)...this can be acheived by hitting F4 while the cursor is in the formula, also).

Chad,

Not clear what is happening. Could you print the values showing in Column C.

Regards,
-Jay

Carr,

I tried going absolute and it still doesn't work.

Jay,

The values above in Column C is what is showing. The formula under the formula header is what is copying down in the Column C cells. The values in Column C should be:

99.56
98.625
97.125
96.375

The formula that is copying down is correct but the showing numeric value in the cell is from the original cell. It is like it is not updating with the correct numeric value. I checked to make sure all the autofill options are set correctly in Tools/Options/Edit. So at this point I am lost.

Ooops....misread what you needed. Absolute referencing wouldn't get you anywhere...sorry.

What is confusing me is this. the first column you typed:

1
2
3
4

There are row numbers?
Or these are the entries in Column A?

If row numbers, then you are not showing all columns?

Please clariy as much as possible.
-Jay

Sounds like calculations are turned off automatic.
Go to |tools| options|calculation|
Make sure calculations are on automatic.

Jim

The 1,2 3,4 are row numbers. Column A contains a value. Column B is blank for now and is manually updated through a process. Column C contains the formula to compute the calculation. The formula is copying down correctly but the value of the calculation is not correct.

Hope this helps.

Chad

Thanks Jim. I never thought to check that setting. I looked in options and it was not set to automatically calculate.

Thanks everyone!!!
