eth0 dead, no IP address

Hi,

A run a web server on SuSE 9. A couple of hours ago, the box fell off the LAN. After reboot, attempting to bring up eth0, it says "DHCP ...... No IP address yet, backgrounding".

Running /etc/init.d/network status says :

lo .... running
eth0 .... dead

Oh dear

network restart and reboots don't help. I could not see any relevant messages in the /var/log logs.

Does this mean my network card is stuffed ? If not, how can I fix the problem ?

Let's start with the most easy-to-correct problem. Is your cable working -- do you get good connect lights on both your network card and your switch?

Hi,

No lights, looks "dead". Cable OK, other 4 machines in the LAN OK.

Try the cable going to the box on another machine first and foremost. If it works on the other machine then it's fairly safe to say it's the NIC and you can go ahead and replace it. If there's no lights you can 9 times outta 10 associate the problem with hardware. Either the CAT5 or the NIC.

Thanks for the replies. I'm fairly sure the network card is kaput. Tried putting a new card in, but then something else went pop and can no longer get a monitor to pick up a signal from the box. Going for a rebuild, transferred all web & db services to the mail server. Guess go for a rebuild at the weekend.

Hope the mail server doesn't go down in the meantime !

Hmm,
That's kind of strange. You might check the motherboard, since both the NIC and video card stopped working it might indicate a problem with the mobo vs the NIC/vid card. Also, less likely it could be the OS so I would reformat the OS to make sure it didnt go corrupt. Hope this helps

Before you go through the hassle of re-installing the OS, get yourself a SUSE Live CD (downloadable) and use that. Or use Knoppix or whatever brand you prefer.

That way if it's hardware you won't waste all that time.

Hi.

OK, thought I'd try the machine one last time before I wiped it.

Now the monitor is back talking to the machine, strangely after changing nothing, and I managed to install a new network card, but it is still saying that eth0 is "dead". So it cannot be the network card (I took it out of one of the machines that was working) itself.

So ... eh ? I'm lost. Any thoughts ?

I'm assuming its a PCI NIC, have you tried different PCI slots? Also try something else in those same PCI slots like a soundcard that way you can pinpoint whether it's just a series of bad NIC's or your PCI bus.
