Error accessing CHM Help file 1

I am in an active directory/netware environment. There is a CHM (help) file located on a windows file server. When I try to launch it from one machine, it displays properly. From some other machines, the index comes up but the main pane shows "Page cannot be diplayed" (looks like the IE error page).

I even tried using an account with domian admin priveleges, and it worked on one machine but not the other. Any ideas?

We had this problem with NBS Building (a specification writing application for architects. It is caused by a recent Microsoft update. We had to do a registry edit to get it working again. I don't have the details to hand but I can provide more info tomorrow if you need it.

Let me know if the above does not help. The other choice is to loosen the restrictions on the Local Lockdown Zone, but I would prefer trying the above linked article method first.

I also have this problem. I have tried doing the registry edits detailed in the document above but nothing has worked so far. The help files we have a problem with are sitting on a file server in our domain. I'm not sure I'm putting the registry key in correctly.

Here is what I have:

Notes to the changes above:

. "Windows Registry Editor 5.00" does not always resolve under XP SP2. (Changing to 5.01 does resolve). Use the REGEDIT4 identification.

. Note the change in the use of "\\ or //" whether singled or doubled

it is on a local network/intranet? Also, I created the registy key on my WINXP,SP2 machine, using regedt32. How would I get "Windows Registry Editor 5.01"?

Regedit under XP SP2 reports "Windows Registry Editor 5.00"

Which is fine. There are instances in which "5.01" are returned, and it causes problems for regedit /s filename.reg but these are rare. What I wanted you to do is stay with the header REGEDIT4.

I still think you may have to relax restrictions on the Local Lockdown Zone, but test and see if this is true.

I exported the key from my computer. So, if I change it the way you show, then import it, it should make the change right?

I tried changing my key to what you posted but it still doesn't work.

When I try to open a CHM file it opens the window and I can see the topics on the right pane, but the left pane says "Action Cancelled"

I went to the website and ran IEFIX. Still no luck. Everything is Enabled in my local Intranet Security Settings.

Another question, is Microsoft working on a fix for this patch? This could be horrendous trying to get it to our entire organization.

This was the registry edit we were given to resolve the problem which is Example 2 in the knowledgebase article

My concern is whether XP SP2 with all updates will support compiled Help files.

This is old stuff, and I want to find an affirmative statement yea/neah as to the support. My guess is not.

I added the additional post because I said I would and it fixed the problem for us, with the CHM files on our local network.

I think XP SP2 with all updates does not support CHM files unless you re-open the security hole the fix is trying to close.
