End Task/Explorer in Ctrl-Alt-Delete, plus reboot?
Is this ever used to fix something?

Is your question, "What happens when you end the explorer task in the ctrl-alt-del?" If so, It Reloads windows without restarting (resets the registry and the Tick count).
An example of it's use would be if you use Tweak UI to Hide drives or components. If you wanted use the drive or component you would have to enable them in the program and reboot the they would be enabled. Instead Hit ctrl-alt-del, highlight Explorer, hit end task. When it goes to the logout screen, wait a few seconds and hit cancel. In a few seconds another windows will pop-up then hit end task. And windows will reset.

Thanks for explantion of End Tak/Esplorer in Cytrl-Alt-Delete.
My specific problem:
Recently re-installed Win98Se.
SFC found setupx.dll potentially "bad" and it was replaced.
Problem is: every time I reboot, "MY COMPUTER" window automatically already opens on Desktop and I want to kill it
permanently so it does not open by itself upon reboot or restart.
Was told End task/Explorer might accomplish this but am fearful I'll mess up my OS or Bios or something and the whole system will go kerpluie on me.
Any thoughts? Alternative fixes? (tried Shift/Close but that did nothing)
If I should go ahead with End Task/Explore in Ctrl-Alt-delete, is that all there is to it or do i have to hit Escape somewhere in the process?

at the run option, type "msconfig.exe" and look at the start-up tab. uncheck all processes that you dont want to load everytime windows starts.

First of all we need to figure out what window opens when you start the computer. Then I might be able to tell you how to close it permanetly. Bear in mind that not all running Tasks can be ended with the ctrl-alt-del. As some tasks are hidden by programmers. Spy software in particular. As well as viruses. So get back to me on this one.

Sorry, did not read the post as closely as I thought. When you hit the ctrl-alt-del, What shows up there? For every item that shows up, do you know their function. Example: Explorer is usually the desktop, systray is the system tray, ptudfapp is in-cd for the cd rw, alogserv is for McAfee as well as webscanx. So let me know what is running.
Are you into editing the registry? Some people are scared of that. Some things can be disabled with the msconfig and will reappear on startup. I have dealt with quite a few viruses and have had a few do that. As well as renaming thenselves when you disable them with msconfig.
So get back to me on this.

Rnathchk is associated with the game Neverwinter Nights, I am not sure in what regard. Isrv95 is the real time virus checker for Novell Inoculan antivirus. Realmon appears to be associated with InnoculateIT, also an antivirus program. Are these programs supposed to be running on your system? All things are possible except skiing through a revolving door.

The Rnaapp and the save are the two that concern me. Rnaapp is more than likely a prog that is trying to search for updates on the net or a reminder for a program that you installed. Like a registration reminder. you need to go to the start button, then the run and type regedit. Goto the HKEY_Local_Machine. Then goto Software, then Microsoft, then Windows, then Current Version. Then look for the keys Run, Run once, Run Services and Run Once Services. Open each one of those keys and look at the entries. It will tell you where each running program is located. You should back eack key up by clicking Registry then export. Name each after its key. Then find the entries that aren't associated with any of your regular tasks and right click and delete them. Then goto the Hkey_Current_User/Software/Microsoft/Windows/Current Verion
and do the same in the run, run once, ect. Reboot and see if it fixes the prob. It should. Get back to me.

Just throwing this in.......
I thought rnaapp had something to do with your modem?
On my system it appears during and after dialling out, and disabling it also disables my internet connection.
Anyone know for certain? My suggestions are what I would try myself. If incorrect, I welcome corrections to my rather limited knowledge. Andy.

You are correct. It does. As I said, It is used by programs that remind you to register over the net or update searches on the web. I think it is a controll in explorer to do things in background. Unsure though. But it should ony run for a minute or two at the most. Not all of the time. If it is running all of the time, there is a problem. Hope this helps.

Rnaapp is for Dial-Up Networking. It'll appear as long as you're connected to the net via dial-up. Once you disconnect it'll disappear after a few minutes. Leave it alone.
In msconfig what's the path shown next to 'Save'? By path i mean c:\windows\system etc?

I'm gonna have a friend of mine who's much more adept and informed than I, try to implement these ideas of yours in the next weeks. I'm always afraid to get into some crash with a dark MS-DOS screen in front of me, with blinking prompt, and myself unable to "get back to civilization"(!), for me to embark on trying these great ideas.

Well, nothing I mentioned will mess up anything so I wouldn't worry about doing it. As i asked, go into windows explorer--open the windows folder and go to and open the start menu--programs--startup folder. In the right pane are there any icons for My Computer or are there any that point to something that was in My Computer at one time? Right click on all the icons shown there and select properties. Under the shorcut tab do any show 'My Computer' in the Target line there?
Click Start--run--type sysedit--ok. Open the win.ini screen. Is there anything in win.ini next to either the load= or run= lines? If so what? (Then close sysedit)

Kento. I run 4 computers at home, at two at my business as well as take care of several for my fiends and a few companies. Not one of these have the Rnaapp stay while we are on the net. Probably one of the biggest reasons is that I don't allow any of these to use the task scheduler not even to get windows updates. Any any programs that are installed are registered right away. The only time I have seen it run more than just a minute or two is when some program was trying to get updates or connect to a registation server or a virus was trying to use the net.
So that is why I say that it should not run more that just a minute or two. I don't believe in having a lot of stuff in the system tray, just what is absolutly needed.
In the computers that I repair, the one that have a cluttered system tray (a mile long) have problems and run very slowly. There is no need to have all of that stuff down there. If you need easy access to it, put it in the Quick Launch.

They don't use the default DUN adapters, so rnaapp won't appear.
I agree with Kento 100% on this one. It is strictly related to a modem connection through Dial-Up Networking - NOT because of a "cluttered" system tray or task scheduler.

At the time i was using a dial-up service. Now I have Dsl. I am speaking only from my experience. I don't hold any technical degrees in computer programming. Everthing that I know is self taught. I do not have any friends or even aquaitances that are even the slightest bit computer literate. So I was all on my own to learn! I had no one to ask. I just tried. But I do repairs on the side as well as build custom pc's and don't seem to have problems. I never said I knew everything and I am always open to suggestions. I think this forum is great!!!!! If I had some place like this to go years ago, It would have saved alot of headaches. Just trying to help with what experience that I have gathered in my travels. I think I do well for a loner.
