I am working on my daughters T2792 emachine. She told me her PSU burned up and her hubby changed it with a substitute unit. It has a power switch on the back, original does not have switch and since he replaced PSU it would no longer go into standby and when performing a normal shut down the power up button flashes and HD clicks until you shut off the PSU power switch. Thinking that the PSU was not comaptable I replaced with a Bestec made for emachine replacement PSU and it will now go into standby but it still flashes and clicks on shut down. I instructed my daughter to use standby mode and if leaving for extended period perform normal shutdown and unplug to stop clicking. Other wise there is no indication that this computer has any other problem. I also installed a 512 memory card to her existing 256. With XP-SP2 and Nortons it ran really slooooow. Added Memory made it better. I find it odd that mother board could cause this shut down problem such as this and still run programs okay. I have read many other emachines are having similar or same problem. I have found that almost every case involved a burned up PSU prior to the onset of this or in conjuction with. Has any one discovered a cure for this yet or actually fixed it with a mobo replacement?

The occasional one can be cured with a replacement PSU, but more often than not the mobo needs replacing as well. I also had one recently that wouldn't shut down properly similar to yours, but user opted not to spend out on a replacement mobo and just switched off at the mains wall socket.

As I've said previously, these mobos and PSUs seem to be of poor quality and consequently are not known for their longevity...

Thank you for the reply. The unit is now shutting itself off without notice or reason. My daughter said it would do this every now and then with the previous substitute PSU. There appears to be a conflict between the HD and CD/DVD ROM. I have yet to witness the event but the screen goes blank the HD light and ROM light are both lit and the PC fails to respond. I must hold the on off button to shut down and reboot. Having just invested in a new PSU and upgraded the memory I hate to loose that. I don't know that a mobo is available for this PC. I don't believe I would want to go with an emachine replacement. Any assistance is appreciated.

first I would look into replacing the CD drive....they go bad....then look hard at the HD

next for the cost its gonna cost to replace parts on that machine ...its cheaper to buy a new system

emachines are not great in removing heat out of the box and heat is a big issue

emachines are designed for a life span of 2 years

If you're sure the conflict really is between the CD and the HDD, then as Firewolfrl says, try replacing the CD. However, I'm far from convinced this isn't still a problem with the motherboard going bad...

I have replaced motherboards in these machines, but generally I've put in something completely different, which of course has made it more difficult to get the original XP installation working again.

On balance, I think I'd cut my losses and maybe try and reuse the newly purchased PSU and memory elsewhere.

good chance the motherboard may be bad....I had an emachine when they first started....and I have worked on them now....

To me they are throw a way computers...the cases on them are horrible in a tech sense because they are tiny and have minimum air movement to cool...at least in some of them they have made the PSU better (too many customers complained). the harddrive is not cooled and prone to overheat in most of the lower end emachines...and this may very will be the issue

If I get 2 years out of an emachine I feel fortunate.

The only good thing about emachine is they have good customer support

Well I replaced the MOBO. Computer is now starting and shutting down like it should. But now I have an issue with the floppy drive. It will not read from the floppy, it keeps asking me to format the floppy and then says the floppy cannot be formatted. Any ideas.

oooops! I retraced my steps and found the IDE cable to the floppy drive was not fully seated. I feel dumb - forget last post. PC appears to be fully operational. Until ? Thanks to all who replied. My daughter will be happy.
