I am the database administrator for my organization. I am only of the only people who uses EM to create, and modify our databases.

We have 2 third party systems that use Sql Server. I have also created a database on Sql Server for a propritary system we have.

At least once a week for the past few weeks I have been experiencing the [tt]Login Failed for User (NULL)[/tt] error and I don't know why. Sometimes the connection returns on its own. Sometimes I restart the server.

The Network Admin and I looked into this and found that I was added twice to a database. Once as the dbo and a second time as my username. We found that the dbo account had my login associated with it. The account that had my domain/user name had a null value for the NT account associated with it. We removed the account with a null logon. For a while this solved the problem.

Now the problem has returned. I am the only person that seems to be effected by it. Oh, this error occurs when I log into EM. But I can access the third party software without an issues. I'm not sure exactly how the authentication works for those systems. They we installed before I was here.

Thanks for your input.

Is it possible that the default database for the affected user has be removed from the server? Just a thought.

First is this sql7 or 2k? Do you have the server set up for windows authinication or mixed? If your using mixed, how is your sql registration done? is it set to windows or are you using a specific account for it? I think your using windows authin but want to make sure.

Next. I generally have all the dbo owners of the database set to sa or another Superuser account. its a personal preferance and Its generally good practice not to have the owner assigned to a real user(ie the one you login with) If you do this, then you should readd your account you use back to the server and database.

Check the default database for you. Its a good pracice for the dba to be set to master in case something happens to the other database it assigned too.

We have SQL Server 2K using Windows authentication. I login using my Windows Logon.

How would I change the dbo to sa? I assume that if I logon using the sa account and create a new database the dbo defaults to sa.

I now know that SQL Server 2000 is setup for windows authentication only.

I attempted to remove the dbo account from the user (me), but that gave me an error [tt]15405 Cannot use the reserved user or role name 'dbo'.[/tt]

I attempted to add the SA as the dbo. I got the same error message as above saying that 'sa' is a reserved name.

I then tried to delete the user (myself) from the users on that database. I got an error message stating [tt]selected user could not be dropped because the user owns objects.[/tt]

Where do I go from here? The null login error is occuring more frequently the past few days.
