I have configured Dynamic DNS on an 831 router. It works fine as in it updates the IP address with the Dynamic DNS provider.

My problem is that it notifies too much. I have the following set:-

interval maximum 28 0 0 0

My Dynamic DNS service provider ( ) only allows you to update the DNS record if it has changed ( or you can do a forced update once every 28 days ). If you update too often with the same IP address it blocks the account. This is exactly what is happening.

On testing, it seems that if you do a 'Reload' of the router, the router notifies the IP address just before it reboots and after it has started again so 2 notifications in about 5 minutes. Also, it notifies when the DHCP from my ISP has expired even if the IP address re-assigned is the same as before it expired.

My ISP lease expires every 8 hours and most of the time I get re-assigned the same IP address but the Cisco still notifies Dynamic DNS with exactly the same IP address. After a couple of times, my Dynamic DNS service provider locks out my account for abuse.

There doesn't seem to be any way of stopping this on a Cisco router.

Any sugegstions?

Wow---wonder why it gives you the same IP...is it a small ISP? Guess you could call the ISP to have the lease renewed every few days, or even a week. I have mine set to renew every two weeks, though I have not incorporated ddns yet. I will soon.
You say upon testing, the router lets the service know of the change as it's going down, and again as it comes up...are you sure it's not saying "This is no longer my public IP address" as it goes down, and when it finishes authenticating the PPP session, it says, "Ok--here's my new IP"? Also, do you often reboot the router? I can understand that it seems you were testing, trying to simulate a DHCP release/renew, but is that a true test? I don't think that it will send two notifications when it simply gets a new IP from the ISP---on a reload of the router, I can understand. I could be wrong.

The ISP is Vigin Media broadband. Unfortunately they will not change their policies for anyone. They have a few million customers.

The lease is set to expire after 12 hours but renewed after 8 hours.

The router is not rebooted that often, but even one reboot will cause 3 notifications to be sent which is enough for DynDNS to lock the account for abuse.

I went into my web login on the DynDNS.org site and changed the IP address to something different. Then I reloaded the router. Immediately, the IP address changed to my current IP address. Very quickly I went into the web control panel and changed it again to something different. Once the router had restarted again it changed back to the current IP address. I then changed it again and after 8 hours it changed back again. I then changed again and after another 8 hours it changed back again.
