We have a 2500 router connected to a training facility a few miles away, and this router is sitting on top of a pile of equipment. I want to re-route the connection to a different 2500 router that is neatly rack-mounted.

I know I have to TFTP the startup-config of the current router to my laptop via the network, but how do I transfer this config to the rack-mounted router without temporarily having duplicate IP addresses?

Is there a way to transfer the config via the console port, so no network connectivity is needed on the rack-mounted router (until I am ready to switch the connection over), and no duplication of IP addresses?

If you just tftp the running config of norack router to the startup config of the rack router no duplication will take place as it will reside in startup until you reload or power cycle the router. Schedule some network maintenance downtime and when ready turn off router, change cables, power router back on and should be good to go. Be careful not to put config in to early because if there is a power failure then you would have a conflict when the routers came back online.

JOAMON, you were right, there was no IP address conflict when I TFTPd the configuration to the rack-mounted router's NVRAM.

I will have to leave that temporary IP address on the rack-mounted router's running-config until I upgrade the IOS. It is currently 10.2! You can't do a "show run", and it doesn't even have CDP! Many of the basic commands are different than what I am used to.

Will I have to reload the configuration after I upgrade the IOS?

You do not need to redo the config after upgrading the IOS. Remember to take the other router offline before restarting rack router to avoid IP conflict.
