Hello all,

Don't know much of anything about networking or Windows (in-depth). What I'm trying to do is add my current computer at work to the domain. I registered it ok and it shows up on the list of network resources. But, the list is incomplete when I view it from this pc (I have admin rights), meaning I can't see any other network resources from this pc. I can also view this pc on the network list from other pc's on the domain, but I cannot access it; if I try to I get the error message..

"\\Zack is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.

The network path was not found.
"

I'm not sure what else to check. Our system admin is too busy and hasn't been here in like two weeks and he doesn't return my calls. If I can resolve this myself that'd be great (the sooner the better, it's holding up my database deployment).

Thanks. :)

Zack Barresse

I'm not sure what you mean, "a machine account." I can't find references to these in that link. The info on that link is helpful, but I have done everything there already. I can log in under the account name and be seen by the other pc's. I just don't know where to go from here.

If you were required to specify:

• User name
• Password
• User account domain
• Computer name
• Computer domain

The next page requires the domain name to which the computer is to be added (machine account) and the username and password of an account that has the rights to add a computer to the domain.

The next page enables the user account from the previous page to be added to this computer. (User account)

The next page enables that newly added user to have various rights on the local computer. (Group Membership)

In other words, both the computer and the user have to be registered with the Domain in order to join.

You would benefit doing the "Workstation first" type of join:

I was joined on the Workstation first, and I do have a user account that is registered on the domain. I had the domain name and the domains password to join. I'm not sure what the deal is.

Is there anything I can check to make sure I'm on the domain correctly? Is there a way to delete the domain and go back to the workgroup and try to register with the domain again?

Removing Your Computer from a Domain - Windows XP

Click Start, then from the Start Menu, Right-click My Computer and select Properties.
Select the Computer Name tab.
Click the Change button.
Under Member of select the Workgroup radio button and enter a name in the Workgroup field (it must be different from the computer's hostname).
Click OK.
The Computer Name Changes dialog box will appear asking the user to enter an account with permissions to change workgroups or domain. Enter the credentials of an account with local administrator privileges - either the local admin or a domain account with such permissions will work.
Click OK.
Users will receive a message, Welcome to the xxxxxx workgroup.
Click OK through the two remaining screens to accept the change and restart.

Is there any firewall running on your computer that might be interfering with access?

Thanks linney, will keep that for reference. bcastner, do you think that would work, or hinder things? I'm willing to try anything as long as it won't screw things up. :)

Oh, and linney, the only firewall is the windows xp firewall and Norton's security. The other computer in my office is exactly the same except (well, it's slower) it does not have Norton's. Could this be part of it?

Also, fyi, the server is not 2003, I'm pretty sure it's an Exchange Server on a win 2000 platform.

Further info: Windows firewall is disabled and Norton's suspended/off; still no go. :-(

So is there anything I can do about this? Anyone have any ideas?

Okay, tried all the steps and no-go. Then I changed from a Domain to a Workgroup. Now it won't let me log on, it says the password is not right. I've used the admin password for the network as well (the sys admin gave it to me). I'm really lost now..

Okay, got back in and changed it to the domain again, using the username/password that is created for me on the server. All seems to went well. The message popped up, "Welcome to the xxxxxxx domain!" I was asked to restart, which I did and got logged back in. (My account is still an Administrator account.)

Everything looks the same and I still can't access the domain. Still giving me ...

DomainName is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.

The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available.

When I attempt to access the computer from another pc in the same domain, this is the error message I get ...

\\PcName is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.

The network path was not found.

Any ideas?? This is frustrating. :-(

Have you set under the property sheet of your adapter, TCP/IP settings, Advanced, WINS tab a pointer to your WINS server (if using) or LMHOSTS if using? If using DNS are you checkmarked to allow registering your address?

Check the Netbios Setting:
See this Troubleshooter:

Yes LMHOSTS lookup is enabled, yes the address can be registered in DNS. I went through both of those links earlier and did not resolve anything (although the information was excellent). Sorry to be a pain about this.. :-(

Have you tried your connection by running in Safe Mode (with Networking) as an option?

I can view it in safe mode w/ networking, yes.
