Hello all,

Don't know much of anything about networking or Windows (in-depth). What I'm trying to do is add my current computer at work to the domain. I registered it ok and it shows up on the list of network resources. But, the list is incomplete when I view it from this pc (I have admin rights), meaning I can't see any other network resources from this pc. I can also view this pc on the network list from other pc's on the domain, but I cannot access it; if I try to I get the error message..

"\\Zack is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.

The network path was not found.
"

I'm not sure what else to check. Our system admin is too busy and hasn't been here in like two weeks and he doesn't return my calls. If I can resolve this myself that'd be great (the sooner the better, it's holding up my database deployment).

Thanks. :)

If so in Safe Mode, what is starting in Normal Mode that is preventing you?

Thanks linney. I went through those and they didn't seem to help. Not sure if I was doing them wrong or not. Do you have any suggestions on what I should be doing?

Can you just clarify if you can view (as in only see) connections in Safe Mode or are they (Networking) functioning correctly from Safe Mode?

Yes, it seems to be functioning correctly. I can view all connections to the domain, they are all appropriately password protected except the 2nd pc I have next to mine, which I shared folders with and was able to view those files just fine. This would make me assume that it's a process or service, but I don't know.

The obvious candidates would be a firewall, or any security scanner with a firewalling component.

If it is some third party process then it is just a matter of elimination. With the mentioned MsConfig tool it is easy enough to isolate starting programs and non-Microsoft Services. If they don't solve it for you then it may be some driver that might be causing the problem, as apart from the Services and Startup programs, drivers are also not loaded in Safe Mode. Maybe there are some logon scripts or something like that?

Browstat utility is telling me that Browsing is NOT active on domain. I guess I will try to reduce the services one-by-one until I find one that could be causing this problem. Seems like a lot of trouble to go through, a lot of trial and error. Is troubleshooting WinXP/network always this sparse? I wonder if there is more that I can do.

Browsing may well not be active on the Domain. Many use nothing more than DNS.

The client workstation has, as its primary DNS server IP, the IP of the Domain resource hosting the DNS server, usually the Domain Controller.

Thanks for that Bill. Will dig a little deeper. :)

Have you looked in your Event Viewer, you'll have to ignore the errors thrown up by running in Safe Mode, see if you can find any others?

Most errors are NetB or DCOM. There was an occasional Browser and Service Control Manager, one each actually. Other than that, there was only information and some warning events.

Okay, update, I think it's working now. Finally got our IT guy to come over and look at things. He basically did most of what I did, although he reset the account/connection on the server and disabled NAV (which I tried before, but didn't work). It seems to work alright now. If I enable NAV it won't work, I'm assuming that must have been the cultprit. I don't know how much the reconnection played into it though.

Thanks very much for your hlep linney, bcastner and barny2006! I appreciate the continued support through all of this. I know the long-winded posts can get tiresome, thanks for sticking with me. :)
