I found a guy that wants to sell a Rel.9 Definity real cheap but when I asked some questions about passwords and RTU. He relpied that "the passwords that were issued to me were lost when the master computer was formatted for resale". This seems like a negative thing to me. Being that I have never formatted my current switch, (it gives me the willeys just thinking of it) I just can't imagine what this leaves on the switch. If the passwords are gone how would I access it? Are the RTUs originally purchased with the system, now gone? Why would the switch need to be formatted for resale? Does anyone have experience with Formatting and recovering passwords?

The RTU is one of the things stored on the translation card. If he formatted the translation card, then the switch will come up in a default confiuration like a new-install. You would then need to move your translations to it. Be careful...make sure your processor is the same build, as no all v9 translations will work with all v9 processors. Otherwise, your translations might not work on that switch...

the way Avaya licensing works on the 'big' systems is that hardware and software are completely separate, and software (RTU) is NOT transferrable. If you want to run that whole switch, you have to re-purchase RTU's from Avaya or a BP.

Okay, I could have used my Translation Card, thats true but I don't have Rel. 9. What about the one that comes with this switch? What will be on it from default? Suppose the original owner bought RTU for 500 ports, Announcement board, CLAN, is all that programming gone? If so how would I utilize the switch? Is there a way to make a copy from another switch running Rel. 9 and load it on this switch? And what about the password issue?

We had looked into purchasing a used Definity G3Si PBX for disaster recovery, but when we talked with our Expanets rep we decided not to go that route. JGIDEON is right, the RTU’s are non-transferable. We asked our rep if our PBX exploded, could we load our translations on the other PBX and have it work. She said that if we repurchased everything we had on our current PBX for the spare, then we could. There were no discounts for a “hot spare” or anything like that.
Basically, if you do decide to use that PBX, you could never call Lucent or anyone to have it repaired because you would be in violation of your software agreements and they would probably give you a huge fine if they did decide to help you out.
