I have installed an AGP graphics card (Radeon 2400 HD) on an older system I built some time ago. Basically I just want to test / play around with a HTPC set up using up hardware I had before I decide what proper hardware to buy.

The problem is I am having some sort of problem / conflict with the display driver and the on-board audio driver. Basically XP won’t boot if I enable the audio driver, it hangs during start up.

However, I have found that if I disable the audio driver on shut down, then the system boots up no problems and I can enable it after start up and everything works fine.

I have tried getting help from ATI, but basically I think it would be easier to find out who shot JFK!

Anyway, is there a way I can edit some .ini file and/or write some .bat file to disable the audio driver during start up, enable it after start up and then automatically disable it at shut down?

(I have WindowsXP Pro SP2 installed.)

Try uninstalling and install in a different order. Can you change the resource settings of any of the drivers. Are they marked with yellow exclamation mark?

Hi GrimR,

I've tried just about every permutation I can think of. I am as certain as I can be that it is not the order of the driver installation that is the problem. (Famous last words![smile] )

I can't tell if there are any yellow exclamation marks in the device driver, as XP won't start-up with both drivers installed.

I do have a couple more ideas to try to resolve the problem, but in the mean time I just wanted to do a quick work around.

Thanks for the reply.

Only guessing here, but maybe you could do something with file permissions and access to the driver file?

Script/Batch changing file permissions?

What about removing the driver from its location and copying back after Startup, or something along those lines?

Are you sure there is nothing around like any later driver for either your Video or Audio? Maybe there is a Bios update?

Hi linney,
Thanks for the reply.

There are some good ideas there, however I think I am going to give this up and just buy a new motherboard!

I do have all the latest drivers & BIOS but to no avail but there must be a fundamental issue/conflict that can't be resolved.

I have also found a couple more issues so I think the best solution is to upgrade!

Thanks for the help.

Cheers
