Hello,

When I go into the device manager in Windows XP, and I go under "Sounds, video and game controllers" I receive the following error on some the listed items under that category. It's off and on sometimes the error shows up and other times it doesn't. And it seems like it only does it on the "Sounds, video and game controllers" category the rest of the categories work fine.

Device Manager: mmc.exe - Application Error

The exception unknown software exception (0xc0000409) occurred in the application at location 0x7796644e.

It usually shows up when I try to go to "Property" on one the the listed items in "Sounds, video and game controllers". This is what I have listed under there right now.

- Audio Codecs
- Legacy Audio Drivers
- Legacy Video Capture Devices
- Logitech Microphone (Messenger)
- Media Control Devices
- Sound Blaster Live! 24-bit
- Video Codecs

And my sound card and logitech webcam are working fine so far.

Does anybody know how to fix this?

Thank you,

Hey there,

I'm not sure, but I think your devmgmt.msc has somehow become corrupt. What does it do when you put the original devmgmt.msc from your win xp cd over the "corrupt" devmgmt.msc?
You can try to do it from in windows, but my experience tell's me that would not work.
Maybe you could try it using the recovery console using the "expand"-command.

Hope this works, if not, let me know.

If you:
Start, Run, Regsvr32 /u audiosrv.dll

If you try Sound and Audio devices in Device Manager does it error again?

Start, Run, Regsvr32 /i audiosrv.dll

If you try Sound and Audio devices in Device Manager does it error again?

If you get errors in both instances:

Download a new Sound Blaster Live driver (See Details):

Hello,

I tried running what you said (Regsvr32 /i audiosrv.dll & Regsvr32 /u audiosrv.dll ), but I receive the following error when I do.

LoadedLibrary("audiosrv.dll" failed - A dynamic link library (DLL) initialization routine failed.

I tried installing Windows Media Player 11, but I receive the same error as before for this, too (The exception unknown software exception (0xc0000409) occurred in the application at location 0x7796644e.).

Does anybody know what other troubleshooting I can do to fix this error??

Thank you, again.

Apply this Hotfix:
Then:

. Do a Start, Run, SFC /Scannow
Have your XP CD Handy.

. Get an update to those Audio drivers. The Creative Audigy in particular has issues with its SOUNDMAN.EXE distribution.

. After all of the above:
Start, Run, regsvr32 audiosrv.dll

Hello,

I tried doing what you said but I still receive this error:

"The exception unknown software exception (0xc0000409) occurred in the application at location 0x7796644e."

I read somewhere online that I should try uninstalling Windows Service Pack 2 and then reinstalling it back on the PC. However, I can't even do this because I receive the same error above.

This error is driving me crazy. I can't do anything regarding installing WMP 11, Zune software, or uninstalling SP2, etc....

Is there anyway I can determine what's causing this specific error so I can try uninstalling that software?

Thank you, again.

Try Safe Mode (Do you have this problem in Safe Mode?).

Are there any errors showing in the Event Viewer?

Some general things to try.

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right-click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking. Select both boxes.

If they don't work you could try repairing windows by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.

Thank you for the links. I'll give them a try and see what happens.

No, there are no errors showing up in the Event Viewer.

I tried logging under a different user to see if that error would come up under another user and it still came up.

Even in Safe Mode the error still shows up.

I can't even run Windows Update without the error coming up; very frustrating.

Is there any software out there that can help me pin-point what software or files are causing this error??

I tried using msconfig to troubleshoot but it very difficult to see what service, file, or software is causing this problem.

Thank you, again.

Have a look in the Documents and Settings/ All Users/ Application Data/ Microsoft/ Dr Watson/ Drwtsn32.log file.
