Does anyone know how to set a Dell 8400 (XP SP2) to shut down automatically after selecting SHUTDOWN from the WIndows start menu??

XP will shut down completely (is "Power Options set for shutdown, or standby")unless there is a hardware problem. Need details on what is occuring when you try to shutdown (error messages, etc.).

Shutdown. It does everything normally incl park the drive (noise right before it turns off) only the light/PC stays on

When it is shut down, can you hear the fans running? Most new motherboards have a light that stays on all the time to show that the 5v. is active. This might be the indicator on your box. Does the Users Manual mention this? You may have to contact Dell support and ask them. If this is not normal, you may need warranty repair. How old is this system? Has it always been this way, or did it just start?

Hear you, but, no the box is on. Its a new (2 months) system. I will talk to Dell. Hoping I didn't have to (I bet u hate waiting on phone!) THANKS!!
