I have a Definity G3si ver8.3. I've been pulled in many directions with IP softphone that I am not sure which is fact anymore. I have a software dialer which I intend to use for a group of users. I was told from the dialers manufacturer that I could use the IP softphone for call control to a 6408D+ handset in telecommuter mode. My Definity is a standalone PBX and it does not sit on the LAN. I need to know what is exactly needed to get a softphone working on the Definity. My telco vendor says I need a major upgrade to the Definity because of its release. Is this true please outline the items needed to get the Avaya softphone working. The dialer is TAPI compliant any other suggestions? Thanks...

You will need to upgrade to a v 9.5 at min. then you will need to purchase a clan and medpro card to act as a gateway to the network.

You only need the MedPro card if you're doing Voice over IP. I use IP Softphone R5 to control my desk phone at work and use it at home in telecommuter mode, but I use my home landline for the voice path. I do not have a MedPro card in my switch. You will need a CLAN card to get the switch on the network. Your best bet is to upgrade to the latest version as it will include 5 IP Softphone licenses.

Good luck

Thanks so much for the prompt response. Ok with the CLAN card to get the Definity on the network. Is my release of 8.3 sufficient to work with the softphone. Will I still be able to purchase the softphone product and expect it to work with this release?

Technically, beginning at R8.4 the PBX would support at least the older releases of softphone (at least up to R3). I don't think it's wise to even attempt going down that road without upgrading to the latest release R12/CM2. You're 4 releases behind and at more of an alpha release for VOIP rather than a production level release.
