Definity G3 - Adding VOIP

Management is considering adding a small group of call center agents at a remote site. They found out that getting a dedicated T1 to connect their phones directly out of our G3 will be pretty expensive, so they have decided to look at going VOIP. The problem is they will have to do this over regular internet service.

I've not paid much attention to VOIP out of the G3 because I have argued against it and not expected to use it anytime in the near future and especially not over regular internet service. But now I need to look into what it will take to connect about 15 extensions out of our PBX and going over VOIP. I know there are gateways and routers that would interface on both sides with the internet itself, but what will it take to interface our G3 with one of these?

What we have is a Definity G3siV9 in SCC cabinets. Any ideas, suggestions or considerations would be appreciated.

To IP-enable your system you will need the following hardware:

TN2302 Media Processor
TN799 C-LAN

You will also need to purchase IP Trunk software RTUs from Avaya
 
A call center should not use VOIP with calls routing over the internet. DON'T DO THIS. There is no QoS on the internet and calls may or may not sound good. If you have a remote sight I am sure there is a data T1 between the 2 points. Use that circuit and implement QoS on the routers. You will be much more sucessful.
 
Phoneguy, you are preaching to the choir. I'm not happy about doing it this way. In fact, they haven't even mentioned to me they were thinking about going this route, I've heard it through a back door source so I'm trying to get some information together to show why there is a potential for a lot of problems with this. But as it might not be possible to sway upper management from the idea without putting in a network and them seeing just how bad it's going to be, I'm also putting together what will be needed for our PBX to connect to a gateway. Maybe the cost of doing that will sway them where hard facts won't.

Definityandcmuk, thanks for the info. I do have a CLAN already, although I don't know if it's a good idea to use the same one that is being used for ASA connection. We do not have the TN2302 or RTU's so I'll have to check on those.

ASA uses like 1% of the resources of your CLan. Your Clan can handle a lot of use, ASA, IP hard phones, softphones, IP trunks, cdr, etc...

Do have a data network already built between the 2 sights? That is where you need to implement VOIP not the internet. If you use the internet to support your call center your project will probably fail. Without QoS, it is not going to work. You will have delay and jitter and calls will sound like crap.
 
Prior to release 10 the IP configuration is extremely klugie and not without some distinct limitations. One example is that for each extension assigned you will need to program two extensions as opposed to one. One media complex and one for the station itself....many other issue's will likely arise should you actually IP enable a 9. anything G3R.

 
I started with 9.5 on a G3R and only needed to set up a single extension. I believe 9.5 was the first version to allow this.
