My First post, though I have used information posted here in past and have found you all to be very helpful, polite and informative so before anything else thank you for that!!!

I am a new Telecom guy and have come pretty far but have gaps still.

My receptionist often has people that frequent that area that may have restrainig orders or are a security threat in general. Becauase she is the front line she is left alone there. I need to implement a method of her alerting a group of people that there is trouble at the front desk, without actually speaking.

system is Meridian Option 11C
Call pilot 4.0
Contact Center 6.0

So I tried to configure an MCR key on a few 3904 nortel sets and though I can make them all ring simultaneously, I can not get the name "emergency at front desk" to display when the number is dialed.

I dont know if this presents the best solution, I considered intercom groups but again she would need to be able to speak. Can anyone help with this or suggest a better solution, eternally grateful just to be able to post a question here.

Thank you all

group call comes to mind.. the display can show the source name... she use a hot d to an mcr and conf in an anouncement.. that takes about 3 keys, but she does not have to speak... if you have a spare digital in a busy area.. make it class aaa, single scr key... then she can hot dial.. the dn, press tramsfer, dial the voice service dn for the announcement and rls... bfs keys or hot d can shorten the number of keys..

i tested that here.. works pretty good.. you can even set up several announcemets if you need.. for instance... dial 6111 and the msg says call 911 now... 6112 and the msg says i need backup at the reception area.... 6113 can say, i need to pee... someone else take calls

You could program a hot key, going to a specific extension and when others see it going off they know its an emergency. As this is not really needing a speech path, you might want to consider a separate system where the receptionist pushes a hidden button to light a light/strobe etc. in the required area. Latch on, latch off.

This is Awesome and actually solves the problem the only issue is, I havent got the foggiest idea how to do this.

Thank you again

What I've done when a telecom solution/wiring was all we had:

Get a pull-string switch like you find in bathrooms of hospitals/nursing homes. Install that switch in the knee-space of the reception desk.

Connect T/R of an analog TN programmed with HOT D so the switch shorts out the TN if pulled. Set the name of the analog TN/DN to "Emergency at Reception"

Set the HOT target of the TN to a key on Security or wherever.

When the receptionist feels threatened, she pulls the switch which rings security and they come running.

All of the stuff about having the receptionist make a call if someone is causing problems could get her killed. Treat this like a Hold-Up Alarm, not a phone operation.

By the Way John Poole I used to live in West Cola SC on Shadblow lane in Springdale.

So I dont wish to overwhelm you with the question but your solution sounds like the best.

Do I start with an MCR group, I followed the logic but not the implementation.

Thanks again

HAHAHAHAH...well thats the logic behind like a hot key, something she can just move her fingers and send the alert to a group.

I actually thought you were joking with the pull-string, is that actually a viable option, I wasnt able to really follow forgive my lack of experience, I have about 11 ground start lines are you talking use one of those and how do you create the manual short of the TN-Reverse the cross wires?

I think mr Trout is suggesting that you build an anlog phone in your Nortel PBX. The phone is wired to the button (or perhaps a Pull string) and when the switch (the button or pull string) is activated the phone goes off hook. When you program the phone like this the analog phone automatically dials the hot D number in the feature area below (in this case 11425) Since 11425 has a phone with a display they (the people in the security office) will see the name of the caller. (Yours will probably read EMERGENCY AT THE FRONT DESK) To be perfectly clear the 11425 numeber will probably be a number to your security office. Perhaps this will be a new number programmed just for this purpose. You could program this number on several phones so the call is sure to be answered (per your scenario)

Thank you all, I am going to try to implement this afternoon, I knew this was where to come.

A thousand thanks!!!

You can't use a "button" (momentary contact). You must use a "Switch". Even a light switch will work.

A switch has two contacts. A phone line is two wires. Connect the two wires of an analog TN to the two contacts on the switch. when you throw te switch, the analog line goes off-hook and calls the FTR HOT target.

What I would recommend would be to place a holdup button at her desk. When the receptionist presses the button, have this trigger a timer relay that will trigger a programmable voice siren driver as well as something like a strobe light in the other area. Have the siren driver say something like "Emergency at front desk - help needed immediately". You could have this run for about 30 seconds or so. We designed this kind of system a few months ago for a local university's satellite campus to trigger several sirens around the building to indicate a duress. They were very satisfied with this system.

These are all good suggestions however I work for a non-profit Healthcare organization and there is NO budget for any electrical wiring or anything else really. I am left to build a solution with what we currently have and that is the PBX really, there are no buttons near her or light switches, so I am basically brought back to the starting point which is how can I use the PBX to acheive this end.

new2telecom. Based on some of your answers, such as "there are no buttons near her or light switches", the company is putting a life-safety issue in the hands of someone who isn't grasping the requirements. You figure a way to program the phone, then print this out and give it to Facilities so someone with an hint of electronics background can mount the switch and tell you where to connect the wires.

Will the Group call option that John poole spoke of not work in this scenario, again the prerequisites given me were that she can press some numbers and have a group alerted to a problem and a disply that says Emergency at front desk or even preprogrammed announcements?

Not an option?

Awesome, will this allow me to define the display name as well.

I apologize for a million questions and I absolutely appreciate your patience and expert tutelage

So I predetermine which sets I want included in this group and create a new group and add them either by DN or TN, decide upon the number to be used and configure it on each users set set the display on that DN and when she dials it simply shows that display and how about the predefined message component?
