I am trying to link two seperate definity's together over a multimode fibre. What type of converters would you use to link from the fibre to the DS1 cards at either site.

If you have fiber between sites, the best idea would be to just use 1 system and make the other site an EPN.

Is your switch an r, csi, si? That will decide what hardware you need. There are two ways of doing this. Since you have dark fiber, the cheapest solution would be to make one a remote shelf off the other. With an r, you would need a switch node interface, and an expansion interface. On the back of the switch node interface you will have to connect your fiber. The remote end will connect to the expansion interface. If your switch is not an r, then you will need two expansion interfaces.

The other method would be to use DCS links between two separate switches, but I've never seen that done over fiber...it would probably have to be a T1 (or simulated T1 since your close to the remote site).

I'm a little rusty on the remote shelves, but that's what I can remember. For a single remote shelf with refurb equipment you are probably looking at $10k, as the switch node and expansion interfaces are expensive. Of course, a stand-alone switch will be even more expensive though.

Hope this helps!

You can get an EPN with the cards for less than $1000 from ebay.

I forgot to mention that you can also use the MCK Branch Office Extender product for you remote office. This product has been around for a while, and is easy to implement. You can also use this product over a network connection as long as you have the bandwidth to handle it. They have some excellent configurators and calculators on their web site for determining bandwidth needs.
