The error log should tell you what the problem was. Usually, the Book can't open one of the files. Sometimes it can't find a font, and needs permission to replace the missing typeface. What version of FrameMaker are you using?
I am using 5.5.6 I believe (not at work any longer, so I can't check until tomorrow).
I did discover before I left work that if I open every chapter of the book and then do the Generate it works. But I'd still like to find out what font it is that is causing the problem.

It's a separate window that opens when you open Frame. (I just checked my copy of 5.5.6, and it opens for me.) To turn it on, you'd open your Preferences dialog box and select "Show File Translation Errors."
There's a text file that shows the same information. It's consfile.txt, and it should be in your C:\Program Files\Adobe\FrameMaker5.5 folder.
Rick, OK I guess I'm just slow. I've only been using FM for 3 years or so and I had never paid any attention to that window. I must have been asleep in class when they covered the console!
Here is what it said (I still had FM up from yesterday. Version is 5.5.6p145 by the way.)
Cannot initialize API client C:\Program Files\Adobe\FrameMaker5.5\fminit\esfmdde.dll.
Check for errors in the APIClients section of C:\Program Files\Adobe\FrameMaker5.5\C:\Program Files\Adobe\FrameMaker5.5\maker.ini,verify that the client program exists, and make sure you have enough swap space to run the client.

I will contact my companies FM support person and see if he can tell me how to correct this font problem, unless you have a suggestion Rick.

Do you want to keep those font substitutions? If so, then you could probably open Frame, open the Preferences dialog box, and clear the Remember Missing Font Names check box. The next time you open that file(s), the font substitution will be permanent (I believe).
You'd then probably want to turn that preference back on.
