Running the IPO 500 Manager 6.2 (14). Under Extensions, Choose and extension and then under the VoIP tab
there is Automatic Select, G.711 ALAW 64K, G.711 ULAW 64k, and G.729(a) 8K CS-ACELP.

Right now ours is set to Automatic Select. Would changing this change the voice quality of our remote users? Our remote users connect via Cisco VPN and they use the Softphone 4.2.22 but the sound quality is horrible.

Just wondering

Rob

Doc, we better back up. We don't have enough road to get up to 88.

Generally i use G729A for anything over a WAN type connection and use G711U (in the US) for any LAN connections. Softphones are hard to trouble shoot sometimes. there are a lot of factors.

automatic means it puts G729 at top of it's list. If you have sufficient bandwidth use G711. For internal IP always use G711.

for softphone, try the G711 first, but also enable QoS in the local PC TCP Settings.

Thanks kwing112000!

I have found out that the softphone is hard to trouble shoot. I just find it odd that out of my 5 remote users, they all have the same issues, choppy voice, echo, and so-on.
So I figured that I could check around to see what settings I could change or verify to get the softphone to work better.

one more question The only thing that I have checked on the right side is Out Of Band DTMF and Allow Direct Media Path
what about the VoIP Silence Suppression?

Would that help checking that?

turn off direct media, dtmf doesn't make any difference.

I thought u-law was North America & Canada along with parts of Asia?

It may well be, I just thought he was American/Canadian so didn't list all regions :)

We still like to think of ourselves as outside Europe, I refer to Europe as the continant, of which we are not part and we refuse to take on the Euro.......Rule Brittania....Brittania rules the waves....:)

No, the real reason being I wasn't sure if all Europe used the same codec so the / was more UK and probably Europe as a whole.......so :p

Try it with g.711 ULAW 64k (It will use approx 70k bandwidth on the WAN side with the overhead which should be good for any DsL line you have) if that doesn't work then go to g.729 which will use approx. 14k on the WAN.

here I am, was extremely busy and sick the last few days and didn't read a lot here.

I won't take it personal that you consider US and Canada the same (don't tell we are very close and either side has it's perks)
