compatibility issues installing 2000 onto xp pro

I am trying to install SQL Server Standard 2000 onto a new laptop running windows xp professional version 2002 service pack 2. I keep getting a compatibility issue when the Installation sequence begins stating that:

"The SQL Server 2000 Standard Edition server component is not supported on this operating system. Only client compaonents will be available for installation."

I currently have another computer that is running this exact program on Windows XP Professional Version 2002 SP2 with no installation problems at all. The only differences is that this system is a desktop that was purchased 2.5 years ago and has had the service packs added as they were updated.

So I know it runs fine on the system, but why can't I get it to install on this new machine? Is there a work around?

The only two versions of SQL Server that you can install on XP would be SQL Server Personal (which comes with SQL Server Enterprise) and possibly SQL Server Developer, which doesn't work in a production environment.

All you will be able to install on your PC are the Client Tools, including Books Online, Enterprise Manager and Query Analyzer.

You'll have to have Windows 2000 Server (almost any flavor) or Windows 2003 Server to install SQL Server 2k full version on.

Sorry if I don't believe you....but recheck what you actually have on that system. Standard and Enterprise editions have to be installed on Servers and XP does not come in a server edition.

You know, I was wrong. I am running the Personal Edition on the other PC. Sorry, it has been so long since I loaded it, I forgot there was a version for the PC that looks similar to the Server version. :~/
