Right heres the story.

1 SBS server
heterogenous network (xp home, RH, xp pro, win98)

on the server I can see however!.. On all client machines this does not resolve. even if I ping companyweb from a client the DNS does not resolve. but if i ping from the server it resolves fine. Heres as much info as i can think of that I have checked before posting this post-

DNS entry A record with PTR pointing companyweb to the server's IP.

IIS is fine, all files are there and permissions are correct for all users.

tried the URL while sat on the server, works fine :-/

tried from the client machines many different URLS from suggestions, even ones i knew wouldnt work:

companyweb.domainname.local
domainname.local/companyweb
IP/companyweb
companyweb/default.aspx

all client machines point to the server for DNS resolution.

- works fine on all machines
remote workspace works fine on all machines
client help works fine on all machines

we are accessing this all on an intranet, no firewalls stopping things, no NAT, no external access.

Any ideas?

cheers all

ok half sorted :-/

companyweb.domain.local/default.aspx sort of works.

ping companyweb doesnt work
ping companweb.domain.local works

so when you access you now get a username and password prompt as though the IIS directory is protected, but everyone has permissinos on the security tab!

Well...here some information. I'm not sure if this will resolve all of the problems though.

You said:
ping companyweb doesnt work
ping companweb.domain.local works

So this means that your clients can use DNS to find companweb.domain.local but they can't just type in companyweb.

This is most likely because all of your DNS suffixes are not defined on each client. Sometimes it is necessary to list out of the DNS suffixes that you want the clients to resolve to if you have a disjointed DNS name space.

So on one of the clients, you can test this. Go into TCP/IP properties and select the DNS tab. Here there is something called APPEND THESE DNS SUFFIXES.

List all of the DNS suffixes here..
domain.local.com
domain.com
etc.

You may have to reboot the client...but then try to ping by name again.

ping companyweb

This should work because in your DNS suffixes, you list domain.local.com The suffixes are automatically added for the client because these suffixes are listed in the TCP/IP properties.

-Just some of my thoughts...hope this helps..
