I recently purchased a used Cisco 2501 router on ebay. When I got it, it turned out to be a Cisco Pro CPA2501, one of the white colored routers. What is the difference between the Cisco Pro and regular Cisco routers? It seems like to me that the Cisco Pro's are the older models. The router itself seems exactly like a regular 2501.

Thanks,
Chris

There is no diffrence in hardware other than the lable and color. These routers are sold with a limited IOS feature set. The good news is they can be upgraded to behave like a normal 2501.
In order to do this you will need to use an RSL utility or tfpt the unlock file that cisco can provide. This will remove the cookie that prevents non Cisco Pro images from being sent to the 2501. Also depending on how old your CPA router is watch our for what revision of boot rom you are running. Most CPA2501 are not default compatable with the newer IOS revisions.

Which version of boot rom do I need? Do I have to pay for this unlock file? We have a Cisco support contract here at work. I just ordered 16MB of flash for 2500 series routers. I hope its compatible with the Cisco Pro's...

Here's the "show version" output below.

Chris,
If you have a support contract for this product. The file required for Upgrading CiscoPro Routers using router software loader are at:

I found that just booting cpa25-upgrade-l.112-3.P was the best methoid for upgrading In place of the RSL utility. But they both work.
Also if you have a support contract you can request the most recent boot roms which are covered by your support contract.

I'm not sure if I did this right or not...

When I do a "show flash", it says...

2501#show flash

System flash directory, partition 1:
File Length Name/status
1 2896172 cpa2500
[2896236 bytes used, 1298068 available, 4194304 total]
4096K bytes of processor board System flash (Read ONLY)

System flash directory, partition 2:
File Length Name/status
1 2896172 cpa2500
[2896236 bytes used, 1298068 available, 4194304 total]
4096K bytes of processor boar

I then TFTP'ed the upgrade image to partition #2, which erased everything on that partition. The show flash, then said this...

2501#show flash

System flash directory, partition 1:
File Length Name/status
1 2896172 cpa2500
[2896236 bytes used, 1298068 available, 4194304 total]
4096K bytes of processor board System flash (Read ONLY)

System flash directory, partition 2:
File Length Name/status
1 115672 cpa25-upgrade-l.112-3.P
[115736 bytes used, 4078568 available, 4194304 total]
4096K bytes of processor board System flash (Read/Write)

Next, I did a...

2501(config)#boot system flash cpa25-upgrade-l.112-3.P

...followed by a reload. During the boot-up process, it said...

Performing upgrade on CiscoPro 2500...

Completed. Rebooting to Bootstrap Image...

Everything looks okay now (except for the fact that I'm booting from ROM), I just want to make sure that this was the proper way to do it? Also, what is the deal with the 2 flash partitions? Is there a point in that? I just deleted them with "no partition flash". This is just a test router so I don't care if I mess anything up:)

Thanks again Bryon,

Chris

...I figured out why I'm booting from ROM. I had to change the configuration register back to the default 0x2102
