Hello,

Our adjacent tenant moved out and left us a Cisco 2980g switch (we are currently using on old Bay networks unmanaged 24 port switch). I have wiped the config on it and set it up to our gateway and it is working good on the status quo. I plan to remove our old Bay network switch and use the 2980 connecting our 2600 Router to port 1 then the remaining patch cables to the rest of the ports. I Would like to know if there is any other config setup I should do for the uplink port or remaining ports that will be used on this device. I know this device can do a ton of things Im just not too familiar on what is needed for this type of basic setup. If you could shed some light or suggestions I would appreciate it.

- thanks for your help

Steve

Did you give it an address so that you manage it remotely ?
I would hardcode and match the link settings to the router on each end also . If there is anything else let us know , these are generally pretty good switches have't had too many problems with these .

Hello, thanks for your input. Well the 2980 is up and working fine. I do have one problem though which has always existed. When any user downloads a large file it significanlty slows down any wan request. For instance I downloaded a 62 mb file from a website right now and everyones email and page response times were crawling until the download finished. This is a 768k line running on a 2600 router and 2980g switch. What command lines can I use on the router or switch to balance out or limit the amount of bandwith used?

Instead of using FIFO on the serial port you might try something like weighted fair queuing on the serial port which should give everyone more equal access to the serial connection .
