Hello,
I am looking for articles (papers...) about advantages and disadvantages in using CF, ASP,PHP, VB.NET, C#... languages to develop an intranet application.

Any hint is greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot.

Hey mimi... long time no see.

If you google "coldfusion vs <insert whatever other technology you like here>" you'll find a plethera of articles that may or may not help you.

Some that I've run across recently:

and, of course, our friends at Microsoft provide this (admittedly, now outdated) comparison:

I don't think anyone can (or should) point you to a specific article and say it's the end-all-be-all comparison... because I'm sure that any article that anyone comes up with, you could find 5 that contridict it. You really need to do the search yourself and decide which one(s) you think are the least biased, and which point out and compare the key features that most interest you.

For example, an article that weights TechnologyX over TechnologyY because TechnologyX has native support for HoobleHibble databases probably isn't going to mean much to you unless you have a need to use HoobleHibble.

Thanks a lot.
We have CF but some people are trying to introduce other languages without any training. People like trouble.
The strong idea is that .net is going to do everything they need to do. No one wants to put the money on the table for training. I don't know how all of sudden we are going to assess all these different languages and convert what we have into something completely new.
I don't resist the change, i have a thousand things to do , that's all. I heard that MX if full of bugs. we are continuing with CF 5 for now.

For what it's worth, we haven't had a whole lot of trouble with MX 6.1. It's been quite stable, and solved a lot of problems that we were actually having with 5.0... plus it runs on our Weblogic app server, rather than running as it's own or on JRun. For some reason, mention "J2EE" and "standard" and it tends to make I/T professionals happy. Go figure.

That being said, we do run both ColdFusion and ASP in an integrated environment on several of our NT platforms (we chiefly run on Solaris... but...) ... freely mixing the two "languages"... and everything runs just fine.

But, yeah, I'm with you... throwing everyone into a new language without training is pretty much suicide for any projects that you want to get done for at least the first year.

Thanks for your feed back.
CFMSACCESS, we already have an intranet app. We are thinking making it bigger and decide in what direction to go regarding the coding itself.

Do you know what is the future of CF ?
Would we have to upgrade to MX sooner or later ?

I'm sure support for 5.0 will eventually cease... just like all past revs of any product. It just isn't financially feasible for a company to continue support for every single version of their products. When that will be is anybody's guess. I'd assume you have at least several years.

Also, more and more third-party solutions are making MX a requirement. So, even before Macromedia discontinues support for 5.0, you'll probably find that the solutions that you really really want won't work unless you upgrade. Such is the nature of software.

Thanks a lot.
I found other articles on coldfusion vs other languages. I am wondering if it not a matter of taste or amount of money invested in publicity.

Always!

Marketing folk don't get paid the big bucks for nothing.

That's what I meant... you'll probably never find a completely unbiased comparison. And it really boils down to taste. Everything else can be simulated.
