Hi there,

I have a slight problems manually setting the pagefile size on the system drive of one our client PC's here. All PC's have the following configuration

PIV2.4GHz CPU
80Gb HDD
512Mb RAM
Windows 2000 Professional (SP4)
Two Partitions;
C - 20Gb (NTFS) - labelled as system
D - 60Gb (NTFS) - labelled as storage

On the troublesome PC I can manually set the pagefile size on the (D) Storage partition no problem, but I cannot maunally size it on the (C) system drive. Whenever I try to set the Pagefile on the C drive the machine reboots with the pagefile size automatically selected by Windows.

Is this something to do with NTFS permissions? I'm really stumped on this one. Any help would be much appreciated.

It may be a corrupted pagefile.

Set the virtual memory to None for the pagefile. Okay your way out to make the change. Then go back and set the minimum and maximum values to identical values.

See Alex Nichol's article on pagefile optomization, particularly the Problem discussion at the end. It is dealing with XP but the issues are the same for Win2k in this regard:

So you have a Pagefile on both partitions?

I've had a similar problem - which I haven't resolved - but have worked round. It will let me set the page file size to zero (ie, remove it). Then after rebooting, I can set it to value I want (as you've also got pagefile on D:, this should be ok - 2k gets very upset if you have no pagefile at all - just logs you off without logging you on).

Thanks chaps. All sorted.

I deleted the pagefile on the C drive. Rebooted - took an absolute age mind you - and then input the manual pagefile size for the C drive.

Thinking about it was pretty obvious. I was weary of removing the pagefile on the C drive as I know that 2k doesn't like no pagefile but then I read your comments Wolluf regarding the pagefile on the D partition. All makes sense.

Many thanks to both of you. Thanks for that link too bacastner - very informative.

Thanks again :)
