All,

Any help on the following would be appreciated...

I have recently upgraded to XP SP2 (Don't know if this is a coincidence or not). My laptop has started to run a scan disk at startup, when it does it attempts to truncate lots of files within the temp directory of my profile. After a while the scandisk hangs with my hard disk going absolutely crazy. If I try to boot in safe mode it hangs before it gets there with the same problem on my hard disk. I've had a look in the temp of my profile, and theres tons of directories and files (it says theres 98.6Gb in total, but all are 0 bytes) with strange names. I've tried to delete them and all I get is "cannot read from source file or disk". I can rename the directory but thats about it. AVG hasn't picked up a virus.

Any ideas if theres anything I can run to get rid of them?

thanks in advance

Jase

sounds like possible bad sector(s) on the hard drive. there are other threads that deal with disabling chkdsk from running at startup, and if you can do that, then you can set chkdsk to do a full scan and look for bad sectors.

otherwise, you can use a boot disk containing the hard drive bad sector repair utility (should be able to find on drive manufacturers website) and run it that way to fix the bad sectors.

a third option is to get a drive converter (2.5" to 3.5") and put your laptop hard drive as a slave in a desktop machine and run the scans that way.

once bad sectors are repaired (if any exist) I suggest you manually delete the contents of the temp folder.
