mscallisto - I have followed this thread with great interest, and would love to see one of our technical giants solve this one, but I feel you have a point. These days, if I get a problem that isn't easily corrected, I don't have any nonsense. Scrub it and re-install is now my policy. Mind you, I only have to re-install the small handfull of apps which I use, my data being stored on other partitions. This may not be the case for Anne, though. My suggestions are what I would try myself. If incorrect, I welcome corrections to my rather limited knowledge. Andy.

Thanks Hotfusion.

My concern is that results of registry changes can differ from PC to PC depending on other registry settings and after so many registry changes one typically is at risk for increased problem solving difficulties down the road. Registry's can be tricky.

Re-installing the operating system need not be so painful if one is cautious.

Be careful to save any personal data e.g. My Documents etc.

Most applications will not have to be re-installed e.g. your ISP software, Morpheus, Games etc.

Ask others in your office about their experience with re-installing operating systems.

The end result is a clean starting point that makes future problem solving much easier.

You need to make a decision.

Much Luck

Hello, Anature.

Thank you for your feedback and confidence confer to the forum. I think you have received good advice all along by other members.

I have reviewed the situation. I would propose what follows.

[1] To take up what leaves off by regsvr32, the message you got is normal, I should have taken into account of it beforehand. There is indeed no DLLUnregisterServer entry point defined in ole32.dll so it cannot be unregistered this way. So I propose you only do the second command to re-register it :

regsvr32.exe ole32.dll <hard enter>

[2] After restart from [1], if the problem persists, the following procedure should be taken up. But, I do not want to install any components your system does not have in the first place. That's why [3].

[3] Run regedit to inspect your registry. Browse to the following key, see if it exists at all:

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{BDC67890-11D0-A805-00AA006D2EA4}\InstalledVersion]

If it exists, what is its default value:

@="x.xx.x.xxxx"

This is the installed version of your DCOM. If it indicates either:
@ = "4,71,0,2612"
or
@ = "4,71,0,3328"
then you have DCOM service installed.
If you have it, then it would be perfectly safe to install or re-install an upgrade v1.3
of DCOM98. If you do not have DCOM98 installed at all, you have to make a decision if you want it installed. I think you must have it installed. It comes with win98 installation package as well as MSIE. It won't do you any harmful effect.

[4] Suppose you had it there or decide to install it, download the DCOM98 v1.3 updated version from ms download site:

the downloaded file will be dcom98.exe.

[5] Run the self-extract installation file dcom98.exe, which will be seamless without you to intervene at all. Let the system restart.

[6] After restart, look again at the same key in the registry see if the default setting shows:

@ = "4,71,0,3328"

If it is, then it is installed OK. Your system will have DCOM98 v1.3 installed.

[7] Now, test Drag and drop in Explorer files see if it works.

[8] If not, then recheck registry against what reghakr posted in response #6. Post back any discrepancy. But, it would be safe to import/merge what reghakr posted there if the readings do not coincide.

After doing this series of steps, if D&D function is still lacking, then your most sensible option left is to re-install win98 on-top. (Do not need reformat etc.)

Let us know if you take up the above. Maybe other members may evaluate what I've proposed to put more credential to it and/or correct it so as to help you make a decision.

I dont suppose the problem could be the folders are being saved as read only and you are not allowed to modify?

I don't mean to add to the confusion, BUT, I am not running Dcom98, as my version shows above. I am having no problems with dragging and dropping.

I open DCOM help, try clicking on "open the Distributed COM Configuration Properties dialog box" and get nothing.

I tried typing dcomcnfg in the Run box, got cannot find the file dcomcnfg.

Windoze, don't you love it.

It's still unclear to me.

Mo & tsuji, help clarify

versions 4.71.0.2612 and/or 4.71.0.3328 of ole32.dll are mentioned, yet in the Release notes link ( it lists the version as 4.71.2900.0

Is this the version that comes standard with Win98? As I see it, the dcom98 1.3 is just an updated version. It is not neccessary. It is basically a developer download, not a download at Windows Update or for the typical user.

On my machine under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{BDC67890-4FC0-11D0-A805-00AA006D2EA4}\InstalledVersion
it reads 4,71,0,1719. If I had dcom98 1.3 installed, it should read 4,71,0,3328

I track all my installs and have located one from a while back where I did install dcom98. What I've learned is you'll need to register 4 dll files:

Go to Start>Run, and type:

regsvr32.exe ole32.dll
regsvr32.exe rpcrt4.dll
regsvr32.exe oleaut32.dll
regsvr32.exe iprop.dll

Now shutdown and restart.

I was buried in web sites again, just try to understand more and one thing led to another.....now I am back to posting what I did/checked so far:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{BDEADF00-C265-11d0-BCED-00A0C90AB50F}\ShellFolder the Attributes value is a8400000

my ole32.dll version is 4.71.2900

regsvr32.exe re-registered OK.

Installed DCOM98 v1.3 (I did not have it).
default setting shows: @ = "4,71,0,3328"
recheck registry against what reghakr posted in response #6. NO discrepancy.

Folders are not read-only.

re-registered ole32.dll, rpcrt4.dll, oleaut32.dll and iprop.dll

restart machine, drag-drop(copy/paste) still not working.

I really appreciate everybody taking time to help me. Someday when I am tired of Breifcase icons everywhere I will re-install win98. My reason against re-installing is that I read other threads and found several members against it. (if not really necessary do not do it)

I am so happy to have found this forum and meet so many wonderful people.

I use Win98SE My installed version is
4,71,0,1719
I have ole32.dll in Windows\system version 4.71.2900
I used SFC to extract from the cabs >>that version of ole32.dll is 4.71.2900
ole32.dll in dcom95 is version the same.
DCOM98 File list

I suggested the upgrade because I felt it might help. Often a reinstall of a version already on the Hard Drive doesn't clear anything up.

At any rate. DCOM has cleared up this kind of problem before.

Have a look at dcom95.inf as well to see if all the registry entries exist.
This is definitely getting confusing. I would have to see it in front of me.

Just in case everyone hasn't gone home :) and since everyone else has been searching their Registry, I decided to join in. These are really just observations in case they make sense to anyone.

I don't know if anything may have been added to these keys

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive\shellex\DragDropHandlersHKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\CLASSES\Directory\shellex\DragDropHandlersHKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\CLASSES\Folder\shellex\DragDropHandlers
all these entries have Default ="Value not set" and on my machine with only an entry for WinZip.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\MUICache
HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\MUICache
both have entries @inetcplc.dll,-4796 "Drag and drop or copy and paste files" This relates to a file in C:\Windows\System

Because of the ISP issues, maybe these are more interesting
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Code Store Database\Global Namespace\Java Packages\com\ms\object\dragdrop

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\SO\MISC\DRAGDROP
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\SOIEAK\MISC\DRAGDROP
both of these have entries that refer to the Internet Control Panel .cpl file.

Just in case it's in any way relevent!

You might want to remove IE totally using IEradicator
a free download Here
Some use it and love it. Others have problems.

Then do an overinstall of Windows. Upgrade your IE to whatever version you want to use.

I know this is getting very complicated.
I have had it happen in the past that all the registry entries are made, all thhe files correct versions and registered. But it still won't work. It can be frustrating when that happens.

I'm not saying it's wrong to suggest the update, just saying there are inconsistencies with version numbers and the like. The DLL Database showed this info:

PRODUCTS CONTAINING THIS VERSION:
ole32.dll
4.71.3328.0
PRODUCT SIZE MOD DATE CAB/IEXPRESS RELATIVE PATH
DCOM 95 1.3 778,512 3/29/1999 dcom95.exe
DCOM 98 1.3 778,512 3/29/1999 dcom98.exe

I have a copy of Dcom98 and dcom95 on my machine. I've always saved my downloads.

I used Resource Hacker to extract both cabinet files. The version of ole32.dll was 4.71.0.3328 for both Win95 and Win98.

Anne,

I may have been one of the ones that recommended against re-installing Win98. This is my recommendation if the user has upgraded the machine extensively such as upgading to IE6, DirectX 8.0, and/or Windows Media Player 7.1. If the user has added alot of software and changed many file associations, the re-install will undo all this and set it back to the default. there fore you loose most customizations you have made.

If your system is fairly new and you have not made a lot of customization changes or upgrades, then I'd say a re-install would be OK.

Hello, reghakr.

[1] I was not trying to say build 2612 or 3328 are magic number. Only that win98 1st edition may come with build 2612. In any case dcom v1.3 ends up with build 3328. I was not clear enough.

[2] Install an upgrade dcom has the only purpose of assuring the consistency of all ole components. As copying ole-abc etc from here and there may end up in a colorful salade.

[3] Sure. Install/upgrade dcom does not mean one can use dcom per se. My only objective is to assure consistency in the control objects.

[4] I too am not very impressed with re-install... The cardinal reason for me is that I think the major task of troubleshoot is to do a clinical diagnostic followed by a repair of surgical precision, do no more and do no less. Indiscrimate re-install brings darkness and opacity rather than light and transparancy. Having said, there is also a principle of pragmatism. When surgical precision cost too much for users and helpers alike, it is advisable to do that as a possible escape. After all, computer is supposed to serve somebody for his/her work, not somebody serving it.

[5] D&D is a technology of how many? ten years ? young. No one should be surprised many many builds are out there, and, inside one's computer as well. OLE components and MFC are notoriously in cause many headache.

Hello again.

[4-bis] Apart from the principles of surgical precision and of pragmatism, in order to discourse more fully on the subject, I have to add that there is a wide-spread mundaneity out there in the industry. It is notorious that a sizeable part of the computer industry practitioners survive and prosper by intentionally providing inefficient and uneffective and cost-uneffective solutions. It has not been escape from the eye of acute observers.

I checked out Bluelight.com to see what you had installed and then uninstalled prior to your loss of D&D functionality.

I also found a "gripe" page conccerning their software. Among them was this tidbit..
------------------------------------------------
A BlueLight user forwarded me email between her and BlueLight tech support. She was having problems using the service with Netscape Navigator v4.6; the browser was crashing trying to load bluelight.yahoo.com. Tech support said they can not support Navigator. She also noted that Yahoo has more than occasional problems with its POP3 email. (added 10/15/00).
------------------------------------------------
Intersted I continued and found this:

Over three days and after spending about 8 hours on the phone with Blue Light Tech Support, Win95 still "wasn't right". I couldn't "drag and drop" files into folders on my desktop; and Window's Explorer only displayed the left, "folders pane." It didn't display the "files and folders" in the right pane. (There was no right pane.) WordPad couldn't be opened. I couldn't "Cut & Paste or Copy & Paste" between Open documents. However; my journey did take me to Microsoft, ... and the Microsoft Windows 95 update site. If interested, my "step-by-step" efforts to recover Win95 appear at the bottom of this msg...
---------------------------------------------
Before you re-install perhaps you would kindly let the experts on this forum examine this new data and perhaps they can detect new avenues to recover your Drag N Drop (it now rates capitals)..

The site is:
Maybe senior members could take time to examine it...at least we now have some idea how it happened.

Hi paulwood,
I don't have these HKEY in my registry:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\MUICache
HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\MUICache
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Code Store Database\Global Namespace\Java Packages\com\ms\object\dragdrop

Maybe this is it!?

Hi Smitee,
Very helpful finding! I tried to check spinway site and quess what, the bluelight site came out instead. Now I remember why I went for bluelight. When Costco stopped free isp service they announced spinway bought by bluelight. I bookmarked the computergripes.com. Thanks!

It may be because I'm running IE and you're running Netscape6 (I'd upgrade to 6.1 whatever happens), it's worth finding out brfore importing the keys! However, although it seems a tad stupid, how about installing IE, seeing if it makes any difference, and then removing it via IEradicator as previously mentioned. I realise the browsers will fight over who's the default, but it shouldn't take long to find out if it works.

Maybe it would fix whatever got broke, considering the ISP involved didn't support Navigator. What does everyone else think?

You're so deep into it now it would be foolish not to try!!
I HOPE IT WORKS!!
But if not, as I said before you can always re-install.

Much Luck (I learned a few good things)

`6_ 6 ) `-. ( ).`-.__.`)
(_Y_*.) ._ ) `._ `. ``-..-'
_..`--'_..-_/ /--'_.' ,'

IE is already installed because it is a part of Windows98.
Is she running Windows98Fe orSE??
I suggested removing IE using IEradicator to remove everything. Then overinstalling IE to reinstall not only IE but the active desktop as well.
Then update IE if she likes. That was the logic I followed. Remove it. Wipe it clean. Reinstall. Update if you like.

Mosaic1,

Hmm, that'll teach me to read all of a post, I think I'd go with what you suggested at this point :)

If you are still checking once in a while and still have problem would you check and see if your registry settings match these...
