I have a Windows 98 client running on a Window 2000 network. The performance of the PC degraded. I noticed the error message "Drive D is using MS-Dos compatibilty mode file system".

I checked device manager but nothing is reported amiss there. I also ran MSConfig and looked at config.sys file...nothing to find.

I noticed that the hard drive is formatted with two logical drives. I can open drive c and everything is fine. However, when I select drive d I get there error, access denied. Thanks for the help.

Restart the computer, press and hold the Ctrl key during startup, select 'Command Prompt', type D: at the C:\> prompt, press Enter, type dir /p (note the space between dir and the /)at the D:\> prompt, and press Enter.
You should now be able to view the contents of the D drive.
If there's nothing important on the D drive, then format it(make sure you do not format the C drive), and see if the system performance improves.

If there are important files on the D drive and you do not want to format it, then look here for a possible solution to the 'MS-DOS Compatibility Mode' problem:

I was able to format the drive after knowing what was on it. Thanks a million!!!

You're welcome, gtnetadmin.
