My company has a ISP hosted website. When I was setting up my Win2k server I gave it the same name. Is this going to cause any problems? This is what I got from Microsoft:

"If you do want to use your Internet domain name, it is recommended that you talk with your Internet service provider (ISP) before making this decision. They may recommend a DNS name for you that is dependent on your Internet domain name and the agreement with them on how your Internet name resolution will be configured.

For example, if an ISP will be hosting the domain, some ISP's recommend that your server's DNS name has a prefix appended to it (for example, corp.microsoft.com) for security reasons. In addition, manual configuration of several of the Small Business Server applications will be necessary in this case."

Does anybody know any details on that last sentence? Any insight would be appriciated. I need to have this server going real soon and if I need to reinstall to change the name I need to do it like now.

thanks
Ryan

No it wont cause any problems, unless you plan on hosting any internet services with that domain. And as long as your DNS server/s arent registered Name Servers on the internet

I plan on running Exchange Server also so will that cause problems? So I don't have to worry about it down the road should I just change the domain name now before the server is up and running totally (and it effects anybody but me)? I'm assuming this would require me to re-install Windows2k? (btw I'm using Small Business Server).

Thanks a lot for the response.

As Sith said, there is no problems with any of the Windows services when you have a registered domain hosted by someone else, and the same name on your Win2k Server, except that your DNS service should not be set for dynamic updates as it won't be a registered name server. It will be authorative for your domain, and if you configure forwarders it will answer your internal clients requests for internet names.

I have a question about my w2k server. I am running a local network, through simple crossover cat 5 no switch. I have winroute pro installed on the w2k machine acting as a gateway to the internet.

I am serving my http: files from the w2k gateway machine. Currently I have enabled all tcp/ip ports, in the firewall, (just for now I'm trying to eliminate possible problems) Anyway, I can access the site from both computers in my home network by simply typing in the ip in an internet browser. The Ip I'm hosting on is my outside IP, which is dynamically obtained from my ISP even though I have cable and it doesn't change much.

When I try to access the site from a remote location, anywhere other than my (home network) it is never found. Like its not up and running. Anyone know why this may be?

Are you typing the dynamically assigned IP address in a computer external to your network and not finding your server? Have you checked with your cable ISP? At one time they were blocking incoming HTTP (and others) traffic to limit DDOS attacks and spread of viruses (thier reasoning was home users cannot be expected to secure their machines properly.)

I have been running the setup you describe with an ISP hosted domain name and my domain using the same name for 2 years with no issues.

It works fine and makes it easier when describing what a domain is to the users and what to use when asked for it.
