Anyone ever seen this (a ? and a box) preceeding the caller id name? I have had Avaya look into it and they say the provider is sending it, the provider is 100% sure they are not sending it and that it is an IP Office issue. Not getting anywhere with either of them. Hoping someone here has experienced it and if so, what was the solution? Thanks.

analog or PRI lines

If you can't be good, be good at it!

Look at delta server or monitor and see what's coming up there. In phone manager, is it the same (i.e. ?box in the from column)? If analog, I'm not sure that polarity is important. One other thing, if it's analog, take a run-of-the-mill callerID box and plug it into the trunk and see what's displayed. The network interface makes this task less burdensome.

If it's analog, did you try changing the CLI to LONG CLI in the line config? In PRI, is it CLID with or without name? Also, if PRI, what is the switch type? Although the provider may be a DMS100 shop, they will request NI in the CPE.

Drew

It's a PRI. The monitor trace shows the ?box. The call status shows the ?box as well. It's set-up as NI2 so they can get caller id name. The number comes across fine, it's just the name that has the ?box before it.

Take a monitor snapshot of the ISDN trace on a incoming call showing the ?Box thing and put it here.

Here is a monitor trace:

This trace does not show ?box in the trace

Does the wireless caller has a spac ein front of it's name ?

I'm not sure I understand. The trace shows "...Wireless Caller", which appears to be interpreted later in the trace as "Box?Wireless Caller" (see line 1229056Ms). It's not (1) caller, it's every caller that comes in like this regardless if it is a wireless call or a land-line call.

He probably can't post that here. It's probably not a valid character for the forum and therefore is interpreted as something else. It does appear as though there are some spaces prior to the name. I would check with the telco to see what switch and version level they're on.
Is it a big carrier or are you dealing with a CLEC?

Drew

It's a CLEC, Access One if you've ever heard of them where you are.

Now i understand "box" :-)
That happens when there is a space !!!

When you copy a space and replace that in notepath you will see that box !

I would call the CLEC and ask what type of switch and version level they are on. Also, are you at the latest version on the IPO?

This sounds like they are padding the setup packet for some reason. How many digits are they passing on to the IPO for DID (3,4, etc.)?

Drew

This is a carrier issue,

They are sending illegal characters (i.e. values not included in the IA5 alphabet) 10 - is not printable and B1 is not decodable (B1 is longer than 7 bit)

I have always wished that my computer would be as easy to use as my telephone.
My wish has come true. I no longer know how to use my telephone.

Matt, a star for that and for my learning something.

On the basis of that they would appear to be trying to send a line feed (which is valid with the character set but meaningless in terms of monitor/phone cli display) and then (if they are assuming extended ascii) a +/– character.

It may not necessarily be the carrier though, they may be honestly passing on what they are sent even though it is out of scope of the spec.

Meanwhile I have to say I was largely ignoring this thread as what appears in monitor traces is not a problem unless it reflect something actually appearing on phones.

>It may not necessarily be the carrier though

Isn't caller name display only provided by carriers in the US? (being UK based, I don't know)

Sizbut - thanks for the star! Just out of interest, what was it that you didn't know?

I didn't know the allowable character was IA5 rather than ASCII. I can take the star back if you want!

I would also look at the 'TAG' field on the incoming call route. I seem to remember a post that this field was not (as usually) blank after a upgrade or install.

I was just interested... IA5 is the ITU standard.

Thanks everyone for your replies. The provider did finally admit it was on their end. They had to change their setting from "display" to "set-up". Not sure what that means, but if it happens to someone else hopefully that helps.
