I have been getting the Blue Screen of Death in XP Pro, for the first time, and I believe it may be due to the recent install of Symantec's Internet Security 2004. The message reads:

Driver IRQL Not Less or Equal

Stop 0x000000D1 (0x0000002c, 0x00000002, 0x00000000, 0xeef97715)

Symredrv. sys - Address eef977y5 Base at eef9700, datestamp 3f52c8ee

I have uninstalled and reinstalled the program, and had a BSOD immediately again. I am running on a Dell Dimension 8200 networked to another 8200 and an Inspiron 5100. Both of the other machines have had no BSOD's and are running the Symantec product. But this machine is the Internet portal for the network. Otherwise the setup on both 8200's is the same. I did a diagnostic all last night on memory, disk and so on...but no errors reported. Any ideas? I am, if BSOD's persist, thinking about rolling back to Internet Security 2003 and seeing what happens. Of course, there is no mention of this problem on Symantec's site.

Thanks.

Since it is XP Pro, last resort is to do a system restore. Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Restore. You can go back to the day before install.

I am able to restart and everything is running fine...until, after many hours, even a day or so, the BSOD reappears. Been up and running now for 12 hours, but I am very frustrated by the fact that the referenced file is Symnantec's, but they have no option on their site for posing questions or submitting technical feedback. If you want to talk to a tech, they charge you! How is that for service, when, apparently, it is there software that is probably causing the error?

A couple of weeks ago I installed Nortons AV 2004 programm, all went well during installation and validation over the internet. However I straight away noticed a system slow down. During boot up it took over 2 and a half minutes before I could use any key, normally it only takes 20 to 21 seconds max. A couple of days later I got exactly the same BSOD as you got. Uninstallation did not help at all. It booted ok but was still slow like an oxcart. I finally ghosted my backup array across and all returned to normal. Needless to say I did not install NAV 2004 to any of our three servers. Regards

This "blue screen of death" occurred on each of my new laptops. Finally after doing some research, my IT helper decided to uninstall the Linksys wireless card I had and re-install a different Linksys wireless card. Now my system works like a champ.

astrobill, I had the same BSOD...I reinstalled W2k, then installed XP and still had the same problem. After MANY hours and $ upgrading...it was one of my memory chips...try removing all your memory and working one stick at a time until you know which one it is or not at all....the good thing is..I got a ^$ bit system now with 1.5gigs of ram :)

In the future everything will work...

The Symantec Automated Support Assistant

The Automated Support Assistant is a diagnostic utility that you can download and run on your computer to assist finding and helping correct common support issues with Symantec products. The utility is a Windows program that uses ActiveX® technology to integrate with the Symantec Support Web site. Symantec product information found by the utility is sent securely to Symantec for analysis. No personal information is ever accessed. This utility is read-only, and no part of your system can be altered by it.

This process uses Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) encryption to transmit the collected product information data. SSL uses a private key to encrypt data transferred over the SSL connection. You can verify that your transmission is secure by looking for a closed padlock icon in the bottom (status) bar of your browser window or by verifying that the address of the displayed page begins with https.

I just recently installed the software to run steam/ valve games. when i am playing either Counter Strike and or DOD my computer will be playing it maybe for a little while or it will start and then automatically crash. This only happens when i use steam software. I have a 2.4 pentium, 9800 pro, with 1 gig of ram, my machine is more than qualified to run these games. i am also running XP. now the problem is when i am playing it tells me, after it crashes the game and tries to restart the computer until i stopped it from doing that so i could read the message,
"A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer
Driver_IRQL_Not_Less_or_Equal
If this is the first time you've seen this stop errror screen, restart your computer . IF this appears again check all new hardware/software. Check for windows updates.
If problem continues then remove or disable new hardware/software
Disable bios cachin or shadowing.
technical info " then it says a whole bunch of hex values and then says the first hex number 0x0000001
"portcls.sys-address F6CBC79B base at F6CBB00, date stamp 41107F13"
the F6cBC thing appears in the first set or hex values as well. So i did what it said and i looked in the bios for anything along the lines of caching or shadowing but i came up with nothing, the only thing that was remotely close was a thing for ASUS motherboards called video memory caching or something like that, and yes i did try to switch it to the other setting and it still crashed. Please help me i think that i have given you everything you need to fix this problem but if not just ask for more.

i would also like to know if bcastner's fix would work for my computer

MrBateman,

Your issue is with portcls.sys, a sound driver.
It is noted in the ASUS forums as an issue under SP2, with the recommendation to replace it in c:\windows\system32 and in the c:\windows\system32\dllcache folder with the pre-SP2 version: 5.1.2600.1106

ok thank you that helps me out but everytime i look on the asus website i can't find the driver for my Asus motherboard sound card combo and the number of the product is P4S800 SIS 648 Chipset. i look for the drivers and they only have the newest verisons. What do i do? And also it said that the forums were down.

I hate to post so many times but i now know what it is i have to do i have ben looking this up for a while now but i was only wondering if you know where to get this version of the driver for the motherboard?

Some possibilities to add to linney's comment:

. Call MSFT for this Hotfix:
. Download SP1a and extract its contents to a folder:
Say you make a folder c:\sp1a to hold the extraction.

Use the Start, Run dialogue to extract the contents of the Service Pack to the created c:\sp1a folder.

The Run dialogue box is accessed from Start, Run

The command to begin the extraction is: <file_path>\xpsp1a_en_x86.exe -U -X:C:\sp1a
