Is there a way to find how your site ranks with certain keywords in a Google search? If I type in "web design" for a site that come in at, say number 411, I have to check through 42 pages.

If I put in the company name or do an Advanced Search in Google and limit it to the Domain Name it will not show the true position.

It their a facility within Google or any other cheapish/free software that would show the true position for that site based on just the keywords.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Mike

Thanks once again Chris. Trying to set up for last 90mins, but Google servers down for getting API key.

Had a evening yesterday going through IHY forum and joined a few directories. Also looked at a couple that required reciprical links, but from what's been said in previous threads, am I right in thinking my link to them is more benefical to them, that theirs to me? Does this dilute my overall website value? Should I just go for those that don't want me to link to them.

Got through to DMOZ at last (I know I'll have to wait forever), WOW directory, passed the Zealot's test before finding they wouldn't accept commercial listings and had to give up again on Yahoo. Web Savvy wasn't able to accept new URLs all evening either.

I'm not prepared to do it myself at the moment, but if a customer was prepared to pay $199 for a fastrack Yahoo listing does it speed things up much? What about the $39 ones affiliated to IHY?

Am I better going for directories or trying to find similar sites to swop with. Trouble there is I'm not holding a very good hand at the moment. I'm working on ABC site tonight and adding trying to integrate tips into the pages.

I'm embarrassed to admit it, but I still don't understand Google Page Ranking. Is PR5 better or worse than PR4 and what does it mean? Is it better than LP?

Thanks,

Mike

Hi Mike.

It's not just Google, seems to be everything today. there is either problems with the root DNS servers or some major problems on a backbone router somewhere. MSN is dropping every few mins, servers & mail systems I've working on all day keep dropping out. Possibly even some heavy virus activity.

The £199 at Yahoo guarantees nothing apart from a 3 day review and they might reject the site as well.
A link back to a good directory helps both sites ultimately, but a true quality directory shouldn't require you to link back.
Websavvy submission is down until the upgrade is finished hopefully in the next 3 or 4 days. but at least the submission queue is clearing [smile]. The directories arent affiliated with IHY, Doug sees them as important enough for their own forum There are a few more creeping up that may well get their own at some point. There's a few more listed here as well.
Don't worry about not understanding PR (you and several thousand others) It doesn't mean much in the grand scheme of things and look at getting incoming links as a long term thing.

Chris.

So long, and thanks for all the fish.

Chris,

Definately problems out there in the ether - still no google to get my API key, getting crap excuses about servers either not available or dropping all day ("there is a new server being installed"), and I keep losing this thread.

I meant "affiliated to IHY" in the sense that these directories were recognised and respected by SEO experts (amongst others) and I would not just receive a spam mountain for my time.

Brilliant link Chris [2thumbsup] to the highrankings thread on directories. You recommended ISEDB a few weeks back, but I can sppreciate it a lot more now.

Sod the improvements on ABC, that can wait till tomorrow. I'm going to spend this evening with a few beers and the directories thread.

Thanks,

MIke
