can anyone help, The window of his video editing programme appears 2/3 up on the screen, so he cannopt reach any of the buttons, or the bar to move it down the screen so he can see everything.
He has tried ctrl>alt>del. several times but everytime he re-opens the programme the window appears in the same place..
He has shut down the computer, but still has the same problem on re-start.

Right-click the Video Editing Application on the Task Bar. Left-click Move. Do not click anything else - use the Down arrow button on the keyboard to move the window.

If you're able, try temporarily altering the screen resolution (higher). This will make everything appear smaller on the screen and you may then be able to "reach" the appropriate buttons. Adjust accordingly, then reset screen resolution.

Thanks for these replies, BUT does anyone know WHY it is happening.
we already had the machine checked out in February as it was happening then, at PCW under a health check but that is all automated and didn't pick up any problems. This is becoming a nuisance
thanks

Well I won't make any facetious comments about PCW's techniques. [wink] But...

Of what did their "Health Check" consist? A good check for viruses, trojans, adware, malware etc., with SEVERAL different programmes would be a good start. You could also try and on-line scan at which may help to clean up or highlight any baddies.

Have you been in contact with writers of the video editing software to see if there are any known bugs (or fixes)? Have a browse of their website first.

Does this problem happen to any other applications?

ROGER - G0AOZ.

HI Roger, it only seems to happen to this programme, which is Pinnacle 7, which we know is old but works and my hubby knows what he is doing with it.
As far as I kow teh PCW health check searched for most stuff, and the tech commented on how clean our machine was. ( I try to keep it so, I use Spybot, Adaware and NortonAV 2006)
I will try defragging again, as he has deleted a lot of his temporary video stuff, and will scan it tomorrow with the programme you suggested. Will get back with any results.

Thanks once again

I doubt that defragging or deleting temporary files will have much effect, if any, on this type of problem.

How are you starting up this application? Shortcut on the desktop, or from Start, Programs, etc., etc.? Check the properties of either/both by right-clicking the mouse, before starting the application. Maybe try altering the "Run" selection to Maximum Window size, for example.

It looks like a possible Window size configuration issue.

I got a job a few years ago when the owner complained that he couldn't shut down Outlook. He couldn't click File Exit!
I dragged the window to the right, and double-clicked to maximise it, then his the X to close it.
When I opened it, it was full-screen again.

He was impressed.

You might be able to write a VB (or other language) program that gets the hwnd (handle) of the program, and that window, and moves it automatically. There are apps out that return that information (like Spy++) about controls that you click.

How is the view/position from Safe Mode, or from Normal Mode as a different user?

Windows Explorer window-size problem

I was able to get a normal window position by logging in myself.
so will get hubby to when he gets home.
thanks for that suggestion.
will update later today.

I would like to thank you all for your input but especially to Linney.
after I logged on and was able to get Pinnacle to open in a normal position my husband tried and it worked correctly for him.
This might work as a fix in the future even though it is a bit of a nuisance.
I am not a programme writer so would be reluctant to write something for the reg.
(though I could ask my son to do it).
Thanks all.

Do you play any computer games? My first guess is that it is caused by a program that takes up the whole screen and changes the screen resolution. Thus causing your Pinnacle software to look like its shifted over to one side or the other of the screen.

NO he doesnt do anything except this and a bit of solitaire on yahoo and nothing fills the whole window and banking reads his emails online.
It has happened again but we know to turn off the computer and restart. which doesnt always fix it but mostly does. the last time it happened he had just turned on the computer, started Pinnacle and saw the window jump up to the top left making it impossible to grab the window bar to drag it down
thanks for the thought anyway1

See if this might help:
There used to be a free version floating around but I'm not sure if it's still available. Back in the NT days this was golden for grabbing windows that would populate outside of the viewable area. Hope that helps.

Did you try "chipk's" suggestion? Try using that method, it might be necessary to hit the "Enter" button to complete the move after you position the outside frame of the new selected position of the window. I have not explained that too clearly, but if you experiment on any window where you can see the 4 sides, it may become clearer.

HI Linney, we did try Chipk's solution but it doesnt seem to work.
because it is intermittent I can't go and try it while he is at work.

I don't know if this is related but yesterday he was trying to open NERO- we have a sony external DVD burner. and he could open the main menu but when he tried to open the Decode DVD section it gave the busy signal for about 2 seconds then disappeared, and nothing happened. he tried this about 5 times with his blood pressure going up each time (well his shouting was getting louder) I went up to find out what was wrong and he tried 2 more times. At the third attempt it inexplicably started. I am wondering what I need to check in his system to find out what is making it so "buggy".

I appreciate all efforts at help so far.

To get further information about any errors look in your Event viewer.

Look in the System or Application folder. You can get to the Event Viewer via right click My Computer icon and select Manage.

Any errors logged in the Event Viewer can be expanded by double clicking on the error line.

Take any event error I.D. number and search for it on these sites.

Try Safe Mode (Do you have this problem in Safe Mode?).

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right-click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking. Select both boxes.

HI Linney, thanks that looks a comprehensive list. luckily i can get it up on my laptop which I can situate next to the PC and work through it some time tomorrow.

With regard to the display properties:
we have a Proview 17" TFT monitor. the res is 1028 by 1024.
it is described as a plug and play monitor
havent been able to check other Display details as hubby is using it and didnt want to be disturbed.
he already had a problem this evening when the film would not capture until he closed the PC down and restarted.
there has to be a bug and I will find it.!!!!!!!!

thank you all for your input.
