Hi all

I'm having an issue when backing up one of our DC's, i receive the two errors below.

Backup- \\SERVER2\System?State \\SERVER2\System?StateV-79-57344-65247 - A failure occurred reading an object.

Backup- \\SERVER2\System?State \\SERVER2\System?StateWARNING: "\\SERVER2\System?State\System Files\System Files" is a corrupt file.
This file cannot verify.
Verify- \\SERVER2\System?State \\SERVER2\System?StateWARNING: "System Files" is a corrupt file.
This file cannot verify.

I have one member server running Backup Exec 11D and this backs up 2 Domain Controllers via agents. One DC backs up ok every night but the second DC generates this one error but seems to backup every thing else on the drive ok.
The second DC is only a couple of weeks old but i've never seen an error on the box and Netdiag and DCdiag don't show any issues in fact it's working perfectly other than this backup error.

Both DC's are running Windows Server 2003 SP2 R2 and the member server 2003 SP2.

Can anyone shed any light?

Cheers.

I enabled debug logging but i'm not quite sure which file is the issue, i've posted what i think is the problem area if anyone can shed any light i'd be gratefull.

Thanks.

Searching for the error code bought up this on the Symantec site, they blame Nlite and provide an explanation they also suggest re-applying the latest SP as a fix and it appears to work. (backup first of course :))

We can install Service Packs on most Microsoft Os's without actually uninstalling the already installed ones first ... The procedure I believe is called as "Reapplying the Service pack" rather than reinstalling ... :)

But to answer your question, Yes .. we can reapply the SP on a service pack installed machine, this is normal behaviour.

Actually as I mentioned on the phone the issue is caused by the NULL file created by nLite while slip-streaming the Service Packs which causes the Shadowcopy backup to fail.

The error in your beremote was as follows:

04/24/06 15:35:30 brUtil:penActiveObject Information: Active Object is a File C:\windows\system32\sfc.exe 04/24/06 15:35:30 brUtil::SetupDLE Succesfully set up to read the object 'C:' '\windows\system32\' '' 'c:\windows\system32\'

Yep re-applying the service pack worked even though the server was installed from SP2 media.
