I am trying to figure out how to connect these two so extensions can call each other from side to side. Our company runs a dialer called VICIdial that dials through Asterisk for outbound calls and has an Avaya ip406 for all the other phones in the office. We would like to be able to transfer back and forth between asterisk and ip office extensions rather than having to call through to external numbers to get calls from one phone system to the other. I have found walk throughs on how to do this on Avaya systems but I have not seen any specific to the IP406. The one thing that concerns me though is that our ip office uses pots lines on the back and our asterisk server uses an SIP provided. I do think there should be a way to send the traffic through the lan ports on the front of the ip406 though. Anyone done this yet or know how to?

What about SIP trunks between the two systems?

That was my thought but I can't find any walk throughs on how to do it with a 400 not a 500 so I'm a bit lost. Also I didn't know if you could run the SIP trunk through the LAN ports on the front. Our Avaya has pots lines in the expansion slots in the back so I didn't know if the SIP trunks would run through the LAN ports.

I think that only later versions of the IP406 could support SIP so have a look at H323, searching on 'Avaya H323 Asterisk' seems to come up with some answers. You will of course need a VCM.

I don't have VCM and to boot the two slots on the back of our PBX are full. I was hoping to somehow connect the two via the LAN they are on together.

How would I check to see if I have one installed without opening my IP406?

Please call somebody that knows the IPO to work on it.
If you do not know the basics then you will not get it working.

It's not so much that I don't know the IPO it's more that I am moving into areas I have not worked with before. I setup the IPO have it running perfect and have had no issues. The reason this is more complex is that I am trying to trunk it to another PBX and I am used to working with POTS lines. I would think that this shouldn't be that hard it's just that most of the write ups seem to be for the 500 and I am using a 406.

I have found the H323 settings and it looks like I must have a VCM card in the 406. I just need help with the settings for the asterisk server and the setting for the avaya at this point.

The settings are there regardless of having a VCM card or not. Monitor is the only way short of physically looking, in the first few lines after it connects it will tell you how many VCM channels you have available, 0 means no card :)

I check in the monitor and I didn't see VCM but I saw VCOMP and I am guessing that is voice compression channels. It shows that I have 0. So just to check I popped the top on my 406 and sure enough I have no VCM card in it. I have seen I can pick them up online for about 70 bucks. Would I need a license for it or is it plug and play?

plug and play because it is old and Avaya has not discovered there that they can milk their customers with licenses :)

SIP tunks are supported as of R4.2 so if you have a decently good 406V2 (extension AND LAN ports on the front and enough memory inside) then you can run a SIP trunk to the Asterisk. Monitor will show you if you have enough memory, it should have 64Mb not 16Mb

The system is VERY old. Works very well but it is old. It has 3.2 loaded on it and it won't let me upgrade any higher. The manager version we are using is 5.2 but 3.2 is what is actually on the PBX. Below is what I get out of the monitor when I log in. I ordered a VCM 8 card for it that should be here Tues.

0mS PRN: Monitor Started IP=192.168.1.49 IP 406 DS 3.2(61) Sensor 1

You have an IP406 which not enough memory to run 4.0
So you will not be able to use SIP.
H.323 though is possible and still free on this hardware.
So try to setup a H.323 trunk.

I tried to install a VCM8 into the ip406 but after installing the card and re-powering the unit it just flashes all the lights goes green and then after a second or two goes to a orange then red main light and then goes through the reboot light show again. It keeps doing this and never actually seems to stay booted. I pull the VCM and all is well again.

(Our company runs a dialer called VICIdial that dials through Asterisk)is it possible to hook this dialer up to the ip office? this would solve lots of issues here.

acss sme acis sme acss cm 5.2.1 acss cm and cmm acss aura messaging.

We think it's a bad card too so we are getting another one so hopefully that fixes it.
