I want to insert an auto filter into an excel spreadsheet, but when I go to Data -> Filter, the AutoFilter option is grayed out. I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. Any help is appreciated!

Your worksheet is probably protected.

nope, not protected. not read-only either. I'm starting to pull my hair out over this!

I have Office2K sp2. It's weird, because I have another spreadsheet that has an auto-filter applied, and it works just fine.

another note: this "problem" spreadsheet does have a macro embedded in it (somewhere), but even if I disable the macro, the autofilter doesn't work. MS knowledgebase is no help.

Have you tried opening with /s (safemode)switch? Start/Run/excel.exe /s

Then try to open. If it works with autofilter resave with extention sylk. Then try to open again. If it works then resave as .xls and rename it.

Next thought:

Go to Tools, Options, View and see if "Hide All" is selected under Objects.
