I have a network running nicely in xp but since I assigned a password to my administrator accounts on both pcs I can't access some folders on the network. When I was setting the password xp asked me if I wanted to protect my personal files & folders etc & I ticked yes – obviously that was the mistake but my question is how can I change it back so that the network will fully work again?

mmmm yeah but the "Make this folder private" is in fact ticked but it's greyed out so I can't untick it.

Under the NT security model the user's profile is considered protected. Even by default a Administrator cannot access user profiles.

The issue is not that you have assigned passwords for your users, the issue is that you are attempting to share a folder in a profile space. If you convert your filestore from FAT32 to NTFS, linney points the way to reverse the protections on private profile space.

But in general, XP wants you to leave the profile area private to the user, and create new folders in non-private space to share results with other users.

mmmm thanks bcastner. This is really bad though because I need to be able to access the desktop on the other pc. Is there any work around for this? Do others share my dilemma?

Add to computer B every username and password of Computer A. Add to computer A every username and password of computer B.

You Cannot Select the "Make This Folder Private" Option

Description of File Sharing and Permissions in Windows XP

Enabling and Disabling Simple File Sharing

Windows XP Home Edition-based computers always have Simple File Sharing enabled. Windows XP Professional-based computers that are joined to a workgroup have the Simple File Sharing UI enabled by default. Windows XP Professional-based computers that are joined to a domain use only the classic file sharing and security interface. When you use the Simple File Sharing UI (located in the folder's properties), both share and file permissions are configured.

If you disable Simple File Sharing, you have more control over the permissions to individual users; however, you must have advanced knowledge of NTFS and share permissions to keep your folders and files secure. If you disable Simple File Sharing, the Shared Documents feature is not turned off.

To turn Simple File Sharing on or off in Windows XP Professional:
Double-click My Computer on the desktop.

On the Tools menu, click Folder Options .

Click the View tab, and then click to select the Use Simple File Sharing (Recommended) check box to enable Simple File Sharing (click to clear this check box to disable this feature).

"Setting permissions". See Help and Support program
