I guess I'll start here and if this is the wrong place, I'll move on up.

Windows XP Pro, SP1 (yeah, yeah, I know), with full admin rights.
Networked.
Connecting to an HP 8100.
Prints fine.
Unable to add new port or delete the existing port as well as configure the port.
I've removed the only suspicious software package I thought might be the cause of it.
User rebooted to make sure it cleared everything.
Checked network devices to make sure they weren't blocking the request for some reason. Nothing found.
Googled and nothing remotely what resembles this error.
Used to work without problem.

Sorry for the random streams, I wanted to make sure I had everything. :/

For my question, I'm correct in thinking that when you go to add a standard tcp/ip port, XP does not go out on the network until you actually type in the IP address, correct? The user attempted to add another port but was immediately told by XP she didn't have access. The sooner I can get an answer the better. I know, I can't demand an answer (and I'm not), but the sooner I can get this resolved, the better. :p Thanks. :)

Demanding user, eh?

Well, first things first, upgrade! :p Yeah, I had to...now on to the problem.

Does this behavior persist if a different user logs onto the system to add or configure a port? Can you ping the IP address from this system?

My first thought, is that there may be some profile corruption with the way you describe the problem. Also, do you do straight IP printing or are you working off of print queues?

You know how deadlines go. :( This user is an important user, so yeah. :(

As for the logging on as a different user, I'll try that. It does sound like a corruption somewhere.

It is a straight IP for the printer in question. I had the user try other printers and the printers with private IP addresses (straight IP addresses), and they worked. The user could go on and add/delete/configure. However, if the user tries other public IP printers, the add/delete/configure options are completely greyed out, the user can't even try. On her 8100 however, she can click the buttons, but gets the access denied message.

Yuppers,

Sounds like to me a profile problem. If the user is a local administrator they should be able to add all printers and such without any options restricted. Check out the profile and verify that there are no policies in place.

The only problem with policies though is that nothing has changed since the user last had success. However, I'm going to try a different user as well renaming the profile and letting the server recreate it if the other user works. That way we can add printers and move all of her documents over. Hopefully. Thanks. :)

Well, for now I was able to login under local administrator and add a second printer for that IP address and that works under her profile. So temporary work around for now. When I logged in as me on her machine, everything worked. So I say it is definitely a profile issue somewhere.

I would copy her profile settings over, delete the profile and re-import her settings to a newly created profile. You should be good to go then!
