Last night when I wanted to shut down my pc, I had a similar warning message to the one below pop-up:

"If you shut down other users will loose their data"

I don't remeber the exact words - as I was in a panic state.

Is there a way I can find out if I am being or have been hacked?

I have a ADSL connection - win XP Pro

Do you have multiple user accounts on that machine. With XP's fast user switching enabled, this will happen if a previous user has not logged off. If you have an account with administrative privledges, you can see what users are logged on in the Users tab of Windows Task Manager.

I am the only user on this computer.

Thanks for the tip on how to find which other user is logged on the computer :)

You can lookup all open connections on your pc.

start, run, cmd
Netstat -ano

This will list open connections and the pid associated with the connection. Then you can compare the pid number with your running processes

Are you running a home network with other PCs and a hub/switch? If so one of them has a connection to one of your shares.
