Getting calls from a branch I recently installed an IP office in. Replaced Cisco 7960 hansets. Site is complaining that the new handsets (5620SW) speaker quality is not as good. I think they are splitting hairs at this point, but can anyone suggest a higher quality handset without upgrading the system to SIP.

The 5600 are half duplex.
Go for 9600 but then you need to be on 6.0 at least.

honey, i fried the IP Office !!!

Sarcasm, it's only one of the services I offer.

Users are complaining that the sound quality is "tinny" and not as "rich" sounding.

Can these settings help:

I am unsure as to the licensing requirements for 6.0 . . . What does it cost us, and why are software upgrades no longer free?

I feel your pain.

R6 will cost you $199 list price in the U.S. I would say that the upgrades are no longer free because Cisco's upgrades are not free and if they can charge then why can't Avaya? I too wish they were still offered at no cost but then again I remember the days when I could pull up to the gas station and put air in my tires without putting $1 in quarters into the machine.

The size and placement of the speaker is different in the 7960 vs. the 5620. There really isn't much you can to do improve the sound quality of the speaker in the 5600 series phone via software. Just like the engine in a Ford and Chevy pickup sound different and changing the gas isn't going to make them sound more alike. These are two dissimilar products that, although they serve the same basic function, are not identical and cannot be treated as such.

Indeed, Avaya make no secret that they copy everything Cisco does in Business terms, ask them why they charge SSU and licence endpoints now etc and the answer will usually be "Well Cisco do it too, it' isn't just us, Cisco blah blah this Cisco blah that" They don't have their own idea how to do things it seems :)
