OK, quick question. For anyone that has set up a Norstar system with overhead paging, WHY IN GOD"S NAME WOULD YOU SPEND MONEY ON THIS INDEPENDENT INTERCOM SYSTEM:

I have a client who is being told by a PA company that his Norstar system's paging is inferior and that they should buy this Marketcom system by Aiphone for all of their retail stores.

What's everyone's opinion on here?

If I recall, I've seen retailers rip this "junk" out over the years....from Jewel Osco to TJ Maxx (they all used to have these sets). If I also recall, the paging voice on the Aiphone sounds tinny and warped compared to the crystal clear Digital Meridian phones and IP sets.

I guess Marsh Supermarkets in Indy and some Albertson's still believe in taking the Aiphone ride.

Opinions?

this i believe is a forum for norstar techs who need assistance with technical issues and not sales 101. however if you do not have an external paging system setup, it is incumbent upon you to inform your customer of the norstar's paging capabilities and convince them that it's a waste to spend money on something that the norstar system already offers them. have a great day and a better tomorrow.

I am curious How many installations you all have worked on that have separate aiphone intercom systems? Is there a technical advantage to using a separate intercom system over
The Nortel F62?

Seems pointless to me.

I could see if you don't want to put phones out on pillars at Wal-Mart for paging only and instead install those sets otherwise pointless still when just as cheap to put an M7100 and restrict it.

The sales guy may not know the capabilities of phone systems and amps or just a smooth talking shyster.

atdjr123, we do help with questions like this.

Gordon, it really is a waste. With the Aiphone they would page and then wait for the person paged to go to another Aiphone and push the correct channel to talk. With the Norstar you would page for the person to dial your extension. We have used this in different national chain stores with no issues as to performance.

Also with a phone system you can go cordless for the floor empoyees.

One thing is the Norstar only provides Tip and Ring to paging systems for external speakers and can only page thru the phones speakers with out a page system like Bogan or valcom.

Thank you fellow Nortel fans. I too agree that the aiphone intercom is pointless. Like
I said, I remember these aiphone sets back in early tj Maxx stores, installed next to a 1a2 style set. They were in jewel osco grocery stores in Chicago till about 1997, when they were replaced with Norstar systems and F62 paging. Many Roundys grocery stores in wisconsin and Minnesota have toshiba dk strata and a separate aiphone intercom. Lo
