Hey I have this computer with an old Seagate hardrive on it and I'm adding a Samsung HD as a slave. The problem is, when I add the Samsung as the slave, it boots up, shows it as slave and the Seagate as master. But then it says: "DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER". When I insert the 98 startup disk (The OS thats on the master Seagate) it boots to the floppy - I choose either cdrom support or not, it then makes a ramdrive and doesn't show the master Seagate, just the slave Samsung. In Fdisk it shows that there arn't any partitions.
If I remove the slave it boots up just fine.
Ideas? - amgv84

Does Seagate have a "slave present" jumper? Some had different jumpering when there was a slave.
Try looking at the seagate web site for info on your drive. Ed Fair

Any advice I give is my best judgement based on my interpretation of the facts you supply.

Help increase my knowledge by providing some feedback, good or bad, on any advice I have given.

It sounds a bit like a master/master conflict there.

Check the jumper settings on both drives, and make sure that the right one is set to master, and the other is set to slave, then redetect in the BIOS.

Another thing to check, usually drives are set to "cable select" by default, and then position on the cable determines which they are. You need to make sure that the drives are connected as below:

Controller Master Slave
]===============================]==============]

ie, the master should be the first drive as you follow the cable from the motherboard, and the slave the second.

ok, I've tried all sorts of things now, heres another question:
If the diagram on the HD looks like that below, when looking at the drive how do I know what the top is?

MA-- MA.. MA..
SL.. SL-- SL..
CS.. CS.. CS--

On Seagate drives, the CS is closest to the power plug, the Master is closest to the data cable plug, and slave is in the middle. Cheers,
